Changes Coming To Osborne Village



Walking down Osborne Street, you may notice poles littered with posters. They are taped on and left there for months after whatever show or idea they were promoting came and went.

If the Osborne Village BIZ has their way, that will soon be illegal.

“It’s an ongoing issue we have down here, and we are moving forward on it. It is being pushed through the levels of council to have the current bylaw amended,” explains Osborne BIZ executive director Stephanie Meilleur. “There’s a lot of money and a lot of effort that goes into removing these posters when it doesn’t need to happen.”


There will be plenty of new additions to the area as part of a major street-scaping effort running all the way from Confusion Corner to the bridge over the Assiniboine River. One major undertaking involves lighting up the corner of Osborne and Stradbrook.

“The bell tower will stay, everything else is being ripped out. New greenery is being planted, new trees are being installed, and we will see a big, bright, beautiful lit-up tower in the coming months,” Meilleur says. ”LED lights with multi-changing colours.”

There will also be five additional lantern towers installed across the street from the bell tower. Other projects include the addition of 50 bike racks, unique street furniture, and additional lighting monuments at the both ends of the village. But the changes won’t be cheap.

“We are still looking at raising $100,000 more. We have installed a fundraising campaign called ’Build a Village.’ People have the option of either purchasing a bike rack and their name will be mounted on it, or they can purchase a brick that would be installed at the bell tower for years to come.”

i've been watching 300 Assiniboine going up from across the river, but today I drove down Assiniboine to see. What a nice looking place and I love the way they integrated townhouses next to it. The angled balconey really made it look not so cookie cutter. very impressed, gorgeous river front property.

also, the building just down (Bridgeside Manot 340 Assiniboine) has had a facelift since I was last down there. just a normal low rise appartment block, but they added big lit up #'s and some railing. nice little touches

This is probably old news to some people but the apartments on Ellice & Langside are being redone, looks like the commercial is being completely changed as well, good to see.
I really hope the U of W will put some money into the Helen Osborne building, it's now the "Global Welcome Centre" but it is not welcoming, the mural is painted over in many areas. Even just a new paint job or mural (maybe tying into the "International Village" streetscaping) would do the trick.

Also, weird small thing I noticed: I remember after the Donald streetscaping by MTS people asking why there's all those chairs there as people don't really hang out on that block... The ones outside the Alt lobby are always being used now, especially smokers, which is good (although they need a butt stop)... Who woulda thunk, people use street furniture where there are actually people.

Side note, anyone noticed that the new SHED light posts only have garbage cans attached, no recycling? Seems odd with the whole "recycle everywhere" and that the first round of new SHED posts do have them. There's barely even room for one between the post and the chair outside Alt.

I didn't see any chairs by MTS Centre. Also they have both garbage and recycling on the lamp posts on Donald.

Oh you're right about the chairs my bad. There were some with the planters last year I guess they didn't put them back for that reason.

And all the posts added this year are still only garbage, the ones north of Portage and along Graham.

It looks like the poles do have the nubs for attaching the fittings if and when somebody decides to add them.

Yup they do but considering all the construction is wrapped up now and the garbage bins have been on for a while it's bizarre that the recycling wouldn't be up by now if they're planning on putting them there. I know this may sound weird but I actually think they might have put too many bins on Donald (every other pole has them) and it might be extra time/money/waste (bags-wise) to have that many, so maybe they're gonna change it around a bit. Also they need to put a dark piece of plastic behind the signs cuz it's actually kind of hard to read which is which if you're just walking by... and you know some people will not put in any extra effort to look.

It's also kind of weird that it looks like work on the light installation in the Graham concrete walls outside MTS hasn't happened in a while. The rest of the streetscaping is done there.
