Maybe this shakeup will lead to something taller/denser? Nothing against KM, but it would seem that something else might better utilize this non-CVC site.

No, I'm hoping the design remains the same and that it is simply another hotel that has stepped in. That design is amazingly beautiful, even if it is small.

Don't expect the design to remain the same as originally proposed.

The following quote by Kimber Cavendish should be telling:

"I am the owner of the current Kimber Modern and it was imperative that I keep the brand relevant, strong and cutting edge. That was at risk with Rainey."

What does that quote have to do with or in any way imply a possible design change?

This 100%. I'd much rather have a beautifully designed building instead of a bigger/taller boring box.

That quote perked my ears up. I wasnt' sure if it was a re-design disagreement Or an awareness of how Rainey has changed and lost it's appeal to thier market. It was a backhanded swipe at something for sure.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Rainey lost it's appeal so much as it may appeal to a different crowd than it did even a year or two ago. I feel like Kimber Modern might be more at home in like Old West Austin or maybe a central location in Hyde Park, near some other businesses.

Also, if I was looking to see and be seen on Rainey Street, I'd want to be on Rainey Street, not what is essentially an extension of the I-35 frontage road. KM isn't a Days Inn.

Who says it would be a boring box? I always thought it was weird to have KM on the I-35 frontage road. It never made sense to me.

A developer plans a small mixed-use office/residential complex on a small plot of land on Lamar Boulevard.

Travis County commissioners have approved the sale of a government gas station at 1000 N. Lamar Blvd. on which the project will be built, reports the Austin American Statesman.

According to the report, the property sold for $1.36 million. The buyer is Journeyman Holding Co., which has plans to build a small mixed-use office and residential complex on the site with as many as four condominium units. The property is appraised at $1.04 million.

Yup.... why I said "lost appeal to their market". I actually think they need an edgier/more artsy environ. Not necessarily quieter one. ( if that is what you meant by West Austin or Hyde park.) What did you mean by West Austin or Hyde Park? Cause they are too removed from as much walkable fun.

Just considering their only current location near South Congress, which is not directly on Congress but on a quieter side street, near enough to the action but also far enough away to keep it low-key for guests. So I'm envisioning something in the vicinity say of West 5th Street and West Lynn Street, where there's activities but a lighter, airier built environment. Or nearby the intersection of 45th and Duval, or North Loop and Duval, or near Spider House in North Campus...places like that

Got it. I see what you are looking at.
It is a hard balance to find.... and getting harder!
My guess would be East.
It will be interesting to see what happens.

I was walking the Rainey District last night and noticed that the lot on the corner of Red River and Driskell St. (Adjacent to Waller Park Place lot) is owned by Endeavor. There's a sign that says "Half lot- call for details" Has anyone heard rumblings of what could be going here? Also, right behind that lot at the corner of Red River and Davis St., they seem to be razing a dilapidated home. This lot is right across from Hotel Van Zandt.

Does anyone have information about these lots?

Mixed-use. Possible hotel and/or residences. No "official" plan has been released. DAB had something about it back in April. Seems demo permits were approved back in August 2014.

Thanks! Endeavor recently did 311 Bowie, so I'm hoping for a significant tower there. These could actually be separate developments because I don't think Endeavor owns the part of the lot Downtown Austin Blog wrote about. Some density there would be great, because it would draw a line from the Fairmont to Hotel Van Zandt, and essentially into Skyhouse, (70 Rainey), and (48 East).

The Fairmont is now gaining height. Atleast the tower portion is.
