I'm all for adding signals and more ped crossings through sunnyside. I wonder if there's resistance from the community due to fears that it may create more cut through traffic. Perhaps Bigtime would know.

Good point. My prior mentions were well before the flood, but the question is, do we completely abandon those spaces, ripping out the river walk and the like, or do we build there in a fashion that would not sustain much damage from a flood? Seems to me the zoo is back where the zoo was, and we're still building in East Village. Are you against the National Music Centre, Public Library and other projects going in there irrespective of if they are build in a fashion that would minimize damage in a flood?

I think a curling rink is well suited to the area, perhaps it could be turned into a recreation area instead of a parking lot.

I've asked around about this. I'd love to close off most entrances to Memorial on Sunnyside and have one that is open and controlled with a set of lights (damn near impossible at rush hour to make a left turn out of Sunnyside onto eastbound Memorial).

The problem becomes that nobody wants to be the street that stays open.

There is an irony in this conversation. Some inner city types (not all, mostly renters) often complain about areas outside of the inner sanctum that are not grid based, stating that grid is the best of all because it is porous. Reality is, inner city types that are no longer in diapers know that cut-through is a major problem, and consistently lobby the government to block streets. Can't please some - ever!

Cut through is not the problem, nowhere did I indicate that.

I've seen streets with cut through problems and in my opinion 7th/2nd avenue really doesn't suffer from this, as using it doesn't get you any farther ahead on Memorial, since you either end up stuck back on it or you hit the clusterfrak that is 10th street.

So it's not an issue of extra cut through traffic, just worries from residents that if their street stays the open one they will have increased traffic. Hard to argue against that fact, but the other fact is there are a couple of streets that are wider than the others and could naturally handle the traffic with little issue.

Probably won't happen anytime soon. If using the car we try to time trips heading eastbound on Memorial to occur outside of rush hour, and let's be honest, more often than not we aren't using the car to go anywhere, since we have a bounty of services and destinations easily within walking/scooting/biking distance.

My opinion of closing off all streets from Memorial into Sunnyside save one was to have a set of lights so that controlled and safe left turns can be made out of the community to eastbound Memorial.

5A Street would be best contender I think - as it next has the controlled intersection at 2nd/7th Ave. (Not that it would be difficult to put up stop signs elsewhere)

If there could be 2 lights - 8 Street would be good, then you would catch your Peace Bridge to Vendôme pedestrian traffic.

Wait, isn't this thread for EV?

I've stayed in worse looking hostels than that. I don't think it's that bad considering what it is.

Not saying it's the ugliest hostel out there, but it is going to be a bit of an eyesore in a beautiful new neighborhood, that's for sure

If I would've come across this in my hostelling days, I would've been pretty happy. Then again, Ive stayed in some real dumps. At the end of the day, you just want it to be cheap, safe, and clean as possible.

I do wish they made the colors a bit more cheeky. Hostels have leeway to be a bit more fun.

Those containers are funky for the community garden, I just hope the end result is better than the ContainR space in Sunnyside on the triangle lot. Boy am I ready for that to be all gone and some new development take its place.

I think that is part of the plan, affordable housing with market units in there too. I'd also assume some retail on the ground level to tie into Vendome across the street and bridge a bit of that 2nd avenue gap towards 10th street and the Kensington area.
