Also from last night's council session, according to Dawn Arnold's Facebook page, the city is planning to mount a Leopard tank on a pedestal at the newly renamed Superior Propane Centre (4-Ice Centre).

According to T&T this morning Works beginning on the Long awaited Downing Plaza Re-Construction.

They did get a nice shot of the partially dug up Downing Street (Unfortunately I have a paper copy, and don't have an online subscription. So you will have to do without the linking on this one )

Not sure if this was mentioned here, but I heard today 3rd hand, that sobeys now owns the record st Co op property and kicked everyone out. Frenchys, cafe to close.

Sounds like its prime to be redeveloped for the downtown center

I had posted that it was rumored to be re-developed but had not heard that anyone had purchased the property. If Sobeys did purchase it I wonder what they would re-develop it as tho Since it's considered to be to small for a grocery store, and there is the Sobeys on VH, and the one at Champlain mall that are close by.

Certainly interesting news indeed.

It pretty obviously won't be a grocery store since they have that new store on Vaughn Harvey.

I presume the property will be given over to Crombie REIT for management. A parking structure could be a possibility (although it would be nice to have a pedestrian tunnel or overpass across the rail tracks to lead to the new events centre). A commercial/office development could also be possible. It could be that they are just buying the property to keep in their back pocket, but if so, why chase out the existing tenants?.............

The little cafe recently changed owners. That would suck for them.

I think they would be given enough time to find a new location...

That building does need to be either renovated or demolished I went to the Frenchy's just to see what they had, and the Smell is worst then when the Coop was there.

to clarify, the original source is somone that works in the building.. all i heard for sure is that the tenants were given notice to leave by a definitive date later in the year, they rest is up for speculation. Sobeys could be a generalization for crombie etc.....

Does anyone know what happened to the development that had been announced/talked about a couple of years ago I believe by Ashford Development?

From what I can remember it was a $30-$40M retail/residential development on the land which is currently Rogers Parking and the old Oulton's Business college land on Assomption Blvd.

Could one of the developments Kevin Silliker referred in the T&T be this development going forward finally? At the time Gillespie (Ashford) said certain things had to happen to proceed and that they were hoping to proceed in the Spring (a couple years ago) but Spring came and went so I would guess those certain things didn't materialize.

Weren't they competing with other entities to house the first couple floors with government office space, then they lost? If I'm remembering correctly, that's the last I heard of this development.

I'm pretty sure you're right on this. That's what I recall as well.

So it's still only rumors.
Interestingly, there was an article in the newspaper today, where they interviewed the owner of this property (897 Main Street) and he said he was working on a "redevelopment proposal", but that he couldn't say anything more because he did not want to jeopardize negotiations. Also, the owners of Graffitti (the restuarant in that triangular building next to the tracks) have definitively stated they won't be back in that location (although they might look at somewhere in the downtown area).

As such, Scarface may be right and there may be something afoot for this block in terms of redevelopment. I still think it would be a funny location for a hotel, but who knows.......

Well they could always buy out from Lutz St to Alma Up to queen Street, and build a new downtown shopping center, and buy out the First United Church on Queen st to dig up the ground, and build a parking garage for there new shoping center but I thought that might be a little overkill for Moncton...

from the City of Moncton website:

Work to begin on the RCMP Memorial Park Plaza
September 23, 2015

MONCTON – The City of Moncton would like to advise that the construction of the RCMP Memorial Park Plaza at the Riverfront Park, near the Press Club, will begin this week.

The project includes the installation of a stone walkway, seating, lighting, interpretive panels as well as trees. Work is expected to be completed by the end of November.

The memorial sculpture piece will take shape over the coming months and will be installed in the spring of 2016 prior to the unveiling of the monument.

The Riverfront Trail will remain open for public use during construction of the memorial plaza.

Just to be absolutely clear on which property we're speculating on which may soon be redeveloped, it is the Subway Block (named for it's proximity to the railroad overpass on Main Street).

I took the photo below today at noontime as I had to go downtown for an errand.

Again, given it's location next to the railway tracks, I would be surprised to see it redeveloped as a hotel, but you never know - it would certainly be very close to the events centre which could be a big selling point to potential patrons.
