In Gatineau it's always been ''Halloween Apple" for some reason. It kinda surprised us when we first moved here from Ontario.

But over 80% of kids say the apple thing.

I have the displeasure of being in Edmonton today. Every time I have ever driven here has resulted in me screaming 'I fucking hate Edmonton' at the top of my lungs. Easily Canada's worst and most confusing road network. You made a wrong turn? No problem, you can turn around in 15 kms. Coming in on Hwy2 the median is the width of a football field. 7 kms of road construction and closed interchanges. I've driven in L.A. and it's easier to navigate.

The city's layout is completely Schizophrenic! I shit you not I saw a Rona with an old grave yard beside the parking lot. There are empty fields for miles with pockets of dense communities on either side. I know Calgary sprawls but generally it absorbs all the empty fields for development.

^could be a former penitentiary. could be a former mega church. could be a boys & girls club or whatnot. Ugly anyway. we got plenty of fugly mega-churches here in London. Pentecostal churches are especially ugly. And there is worse: the Kingdom Halls of Jehovah's Witnesses. Quite possibly the most utilitarian structures on the planet.

^^Well, that "church" is about 25 years old and was built on the periphery of the city at the time. It was home to a born-again congregation and about 5 years ago the financial confidant of the pastor decided to leverage the building in a real estate deal to purchase the Chateau Lacombe.....things went south, congregation went bankrupt and the property was seized. No idea who owns it now but I think things are still up in the air. The financial genius was actually a con man who had a number of smelly dealings.

The pastor is pleading with the city of Edmonton to convert the building into a community centre. Complete with a library, space for community events and 'religious' meetings etc.

I believe it's not the city's job to clean up the mess the congregation left behind, and I don't want taxpayers money going towards things that support religion.

Interesting. Explains the ambiguity of it having a banner calling it a community centre but then having signs for worship on Sundays. I think it had a name like "The River Community Church" or something.

I'm sorry Edmonton forumers for shitting on your home turf. I just get so angry driving in your city! Can someone please explain to me why city planners thought it would be a wonderful idea to have the Gateway Blvd as the entrance to the city? It's like they decided to surround themselves with big box hell in the event of an invasion so they could slow down the attackers. Miles and miles of one ways and ridiculously laid out mega box parking lots.

I did see some nice buildings and wanted to see the new arena, but was unable to make it further than West Ed (which btw has undergone some nice renovations) after helping my brother in law shoot a house in the godforsaken boonies of the south of the city. Do Edmontonians find Calgary as difficult to get into and find your way around?

P.S. Noticed the signs have been changed from 'City of Champions' to 'Alberta's Capital City'

I just finished a road trip with a few days each in Edmonton and Calgary and I found them both to be pretty much the same in terms of driving...Only iffy part in Edmonton is around the river downtown. Weirdest interchange set-ups.

Did you drive in from Calgary on the QE2? If you headed straight in maybe it was less bad than if you needed to turn around after missing your turn.
