I do like the rolling metal screen at the bottom for car access. It looks good at street level. No-nonsense, honest, visually permeable. I wish more garage entrances had the same treatment. Much better than the tarted-up garbage that's usually made.

I got that. I was saying there are essentially two buildings at the same address. There's the 3 story front building that looks pretty much untouched in the photograph provided with the article (on the right of the image), and the one and 2 story rear bow truss addition, of which not much but the alley wall is left anyway. I was saying that the 3 story structure that Via Chicago was concerned about will probably be fine.

1k Fulton (Google) is getting a "Smack Shack" on the NE corner of the building. Apparently it's a lobster-based restaurant, akin to Luke's Lobster. Definitely good for the neighborhood. By the way, if you haven't been to Luke's yet, you're missing out on a big part of life.

Have you had Da Lobsta? How does Lukes or Smack Shack compare? I am on a lobster roll kick...

The whole city is on a lobster roll kick for some reason. Brown Bag Seafood on Randolph east of Columbus has one on special sometimes for 22 bucks.

I wish they hadn't given the programming over to Four Corners. A market there with fresh food and a cafe would have been much better.

Not so much an accident as an afterthought.

The parcel was landlocked. Although the neighbors to the east would grant them an easement across their back yard to access rear parking, that back yard was accessed via the CTA right of way and the CTA would not go along with it. So they had to change the plan to allow front access.

Organizers are deliberately dropping the ball — the centerpiece of the venerable Times Square celebration — opting instead for an ascending Chicago star to see in the New Year.

Dubbed "Chi-Town Rising," the New Year's Eve event is privately funded and produced but will be promoted by the city through its tourism arm, Choose Chicago, as well as the Illinois Office of Tourism. The aim is to launch a new tradition to encourage visitors to come to Chicago during the winter, when the city's tourism numbers usually go into a deep freeze.

"A big part of this event is finding reasons for people to come and embrace Chicago as a winter and holiday destination," said John Murray, founder of Arena Partners, which is producing the event. "The hope is that this event will grow over time as a tradition, and that it will be a tent pole in a festival of events in wintertime for Chicago."...

The riverfront between Michigan and Columbus? That place is a human dead zone right now. I wonder if this one night a year could provide some rejuvenation to that soulless area. That would be helpful for a certain set of black cube buildings and a certain pile of chinese frustums that are trying to cater to traffic in a part of town that there literally isn't any.

Either way, it would be nice if there were a default thing to do in town for New Years like there is on the 4th of July or thanksgiving. I bet seeing the huge crowd that turned out for the tightrope walker guy in the dead of winter made people see the potential for the riverfront as an urban gathering place. I'm just surprised they aren't doing it further to the west where it's better and they have a brand new riverwalk to take advantage of.

Chicago's "Entertainment" exposure is strangely small on the national stage. This will make an impact. Not as big as WGN getting Conan with a downtown studio facing a major street with 200+ shows per year (which in my fantasy world would have been reality), but still an impact.

Luke's is unbelievably good. Better than Da Lobsta. Two years ago, I reached out to Luke's regarding franchising in an effort to locate them along the riverwalk. They told me they don't franchise and have no desire to venture from the East Coast. I'm glad they reconsidered.

My problem with NYE in Chicago is that it is always 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 FREEZING. I'm no baby but if you want me to stand around outside after the warm buzz of the booze wears off then have scattered warming stations.

Not some generic tacky things; more like bars with fire pits. Maybe mix the Redmoon fire motif in with booze. Booze being the patron saint of NYE.

NYC is nowhere near Florida. It's not necessarily teeshirt and shorts weather there during NYE.

Needs to be an area large enough for people to gather. East of Michigan there is Pioneer Court and space along both sides of the River as well as a clearing for fireworks. The problem with getting these things going consistently is always not knowing what to expect in the way of weather.

NBC 5 just did a report on it, explains the locations. Will include Michigan ave and pioneer court, likely the NBC Tower.

Oh please don't get me wrong. I'm not ripping on the city. I adore Chicago to the core. I'm just saying that NYE tends to be on the fun-killing cold end of the thermometer. To overcome this potential liability, it would be prudent to introduce booze and fire.

Pretty much all I'm saying is that I want that fifth pint in my hand as I stand near a fire when the fireworks go off.
