Because it is Winnipeg. Lack of funds. Lack of creativity. They should connect it (elevated) along the tracks to Harkness Station so the buses wouldn't have to go Mayfair, Queen Elizabeth, Main St with regular traffic.

That is the ultimate plan -- an elevated line parallel to the rail line from Harkness Station to Union Station. I guess what they're showing in that illustration is an earlier, cheaper stage.

I heard from someone that has close ties to the REIT involved in the TN Square development that the hotel component is a go, and that it will be announced fairly soon. They said that Longboat apparently wants to actually do the hotel part first because it's a guaranteed money maker from the get go, as opposed to building office/condo towers that could take a while to fill.

alberta is going to be an empty wasteland soon


its funny how the news doesnt want most albertans to panic but by this time next year calgary could lose about 60000 jobs. from the energy sector as welas the many businesses who will be forced to shut down due to lack of people having money.

its funny how alberta population could dip by 20 percent in the next year

all those empty skyscrapers\

Definitely, but with a couple new towers coming online, Calgary is going to be approaching 20% office vacancy. There are huge knock-on effects when devaluations like that occur.

But there's also some serious concern with EI subscriptions. They're up significantly and pretty predictably. I wouldn't say that Calgary is out of the woods, but they're better off than they were in the early 90's...

Hardly.

Most of the "diversity" comes from other companies that benefit greatly from the O&G industry.

Name 2 more industries that have a big presence in Alberta (in terms of GDP) that could absorb unemployed O&G workers.

Graham and Kennedy is the medical arts building parking lot is it not? Don't think that's related to TN square.

The transitway should be extended from it's current terminus over top of Main and the river, parallel to the tracks. Go through Union Station on the west side, and onward from there. The railway hardly uses that station and is a perfect opportunity for RT to pass straight through.

This was always part of the conceptual plans, as far as I am aware. I remember Lloyd Axworthy advocating for a multimodal terminal at Union Station back in the 80s. Of course, it would cost a lot to build that and now you have the added headache of having to displace the Winnipeg Railway Museum which has grown to the point where it has lots of huge (and important) static exhibits and little money to put them anywhere else.

i hope the city takes this in to account for the Southwest RT and for the future Eastern RT so in the future we could have a direct line from say SW Wpg to east winnipeg.

Yeah, it won't be easy or cheap. But it makes the most sense. Say for Bomber park and rides. Get on the bus at the RT station at Kildonan Place. Non-stop straight through to the U of M. Slow down a bit at the stations. But man that'd be amazing. Or have some type of express buses which load in the NE and go non-stop from there to U of M. Etc.

One thing I don't like right now is the Osborne Station. It's single lane, single file through there. No bypass lane for buses loading. Kind of silly, but not a huge deal.

That extension through downtown would mostly be on some type of structure. Similar to the CN line. It's 95% retaining walls and steel bridges. So expensive. Unless the City just fills with embankment up against the CN track.

it would be expensive to build but it would be great like have the bus leave harkness go north up a bridge over main and into union station. and osborne would of been nice to have a bypass lane same with harkness but what can you do.
