I really don't think the Woodbine is that bad at all. I worked on the same block for 4 years, and it was rare there was any serious issues — there's more fights and drunk people outside Whiskey Dix and 441/Opera on nights there open then there is at the Woodbine.

Plus, yes, that's the most 'comfortable' vendor in the area I'd say... and the bar in the Woodbine has actually gone slightly hipster in the last few years – especially when there's music on... and they actually get some great bands in there.

For "Main Street Hotels" both the McLaren and Woodbine have/had very hands on ownership who put up with little in the way of the shit that happens north of the underpass. The Woodbine has recently sold to some partners who will be considerably more hands off, so it'll be interesting to see what happens there. They are leaving the management in place, however...

No kidding... after they revealed those plans they said "it couldn't hold the weight" and that it'd be to expensive to be able to reinforce that. Ok then, if that's really the case, just fucking put some bushes or art or something (decorate the freakin chainlink with coloured inserts for gods sake) that's lightweight and not too expensive along route 90 and Portage in front of Polo.

I know it may be just out of their BIZ zone, but the city should've given the St. James BIZ some money to extend their recent streetscaping to the Portage rail underpass around the Polo bus stop area.

The issue here is that this hotel and others - like the McLaren, for instance - exist as relatively quiet affordable housing for a lot of people who would otherwise be hugely expensive wards of the system going in and out of ERs with an overtime police escort on a bi-weekly basis. What the Woodbine can do for 'society' at a costs of hundreds of dollars a month versus what the government would poorly accomplish for many thousands is where the real value lies.

I very much like the woodbine's housing component and encourage it.

It's the off sales and vendor that I take issue with...

If it followed the bell hotel model I think everyone would have been better off although it was expensive.

It would make a huge difference to this changing area...

Coming back to the money for a minute, the vendor / off sales could have been acquired for 500k to 600k. The housing stays and the area moves forward in a productive and inclusive manner ...

It's a very small amount for CV to spend for a large urban pay back...

A lost opportunity for now...

The Smith St "Party Palace" (aka Parkade) is currently undergoing some heavy fortification. All the street level openings are being closed in with a fancy version of chain link fencing. The overall look when completed will be similar but only vehicles and authorized pedestrians, ie people with parking tickets from that location, will be allowed inside when completed. Guess it's time for the party to move to a new parkade. Luckily there is a couple blocks up the street.

I've always considered Polo Park part of St. James, not Winnipeg proper. The rail line makes for a much better municipal boundary than does St. James because ... why would the old City of Winnipeg have a regional-level mall?

Polo Park is a suburban mall... in the suburbs.

Anyone know what building that is just south of VIA Rail? Or, is that just a thought if what could be?



I also just saw where the East leg of the Rapid Transit is gonna start, behind that building.

That photo has quite a few hypotheticals in it. Multiple mid-rises on the east side of Main St, multiple skywalks over the tracks and the forks proposal - all rendered in that image. Maybe Centre Venture knows something we don't?

Why wouldn't the transit line be attached to the existing rail overpass and then go through Union Station? There's already an existing elevated line, seems pointless to build a parallel one.
