Next week's plan commission mentions a 6 story building at 1749 N Milwaukee. this looks to be the Aldi development planned at that site (http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20141016/...-trail-developer-pitches-7-story-complex). Looks like they reduced it from original 7 floors, I wonder if this also means a large reduction in units.

The star has been there for many years. It can be seen in "The Negotiator", and that came out in 1997.

Actually there are two stars. There a another by the Clark bridge.

I've always assumed, that they had something to do with the Eastland disaster.

Best guess so far. Couldn't find any citations to back that up, though. Maybe this is a question for Geoffrey Baer.

I am pretty sure the cap was placed there for the Bicentennial in 1976.

Yeah, down to 5.5 stories, whatever that means. Probably the top floor will be set back and not visible from Milwaukee. Not sure why that's needed or even desirable.

this is great. i was just in portland recently and noticed all the great, architecturally forward thinking projects they had going up and was a bit jealous. was thinking, shit why cant we get anything that high quality and aesthetic conscious here. this makes me less jealous. this is pleasing. we need much more of this to offset the over-abundance of total crap.

That's possible.
This Trib article from 1978 about a city worker jumping into the river to save some schmoe from Akron, shows them in profile, but they are painted white. The Red, White and Blue paint job isn't there.

I agree, I also wish the projects less than a block from train stations were at least twice as tall here in Chicago.

I'm also a big fan of Jamison Square and Tanner Springs Park in Portland.

The Pearl, and central Portland in general, benefits from their relatively tiny block sizes (20 to a linear mile in the area between the 405 and the Willamette).

351 W Huron was just downzoned last year, probably the same for 150 Jefferson. My guess is the city was threatened with a lawsuit by one of the property owners and Reilly had to reverse it.

The Residence Inn (Marriott) at 11 S LaSalle must be pretty close to opening. They got food, liquor, and package goods licenses issued to them in the last few days. There was also a retail food license issued to them yesterday for "Roanoke" - name of the building - but sounds like the name of the restaurant there too.

New construction always gets the press for new housing units, and so does multi unit deconversions. There are some up-conversions happening though and I wanted to highlight those via my data from 11/1/2014 thru 8/31/2015. This is also not counting all of the addition permits that don't state how many units and the rehab units to abandoned buildings that don't state the number of units.

I counted 684 new units in buildings that already exist or buildings that are going to make an addition for new units.

How many of those units are outside of downtown? I of course love to see more construction in downtown but I want to see more in the rest of the city as well.

All but about 10 or so are outside of downtown...so yes, most are not downtown. There is one in the loop to convert 8 offices above where 5411 empanadas just opened to 8 residential lofts. I guess there's a building in motor row that will convert to 22 units if you want to count that as downtown.

Most not downtown actually. Numerous on the Southside..
