It's amazing how cheaply the City can be bought off.

I think that is probably because there is absolutely nothing wrong with putting a hotel there. The CDP was probably needlessly restrictive.

Given the proximity to downtown, it clearly is too restrictive if the city doesnt want to allow a hotel.

Especially given how many downtown hotels have closed recently for construction or conversions to appartments or residences... Ottawa often has a hotel shortage on peak events and weekends where everything (and I mean literally everything from hotels, motels, inns, b&b's) in Ottawa and surrounding areas are sold out.

It really is downtown, across from the new Sobeys and beside an office tower. Really no single family neighbours to upset at all.

A hotel is actually a perfect use for the site, as it would give some life to that stretch of Metcalfe, and guests are in walking distance of everything, including the restaurants on Elgin.

Hotel Indigo is just 1 block north at the corner of Metcalfe and Laurier; no resident has died because of that yet...

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/developer-gut-heritage-building-27-storey-tower-1.4783143

Quote:
Toth Equity Ltd. has applied to the City of Ottawa to demolish the inside and rear wall of the six-storey Medical Arts Building at the corner of Metcalfe and Nepean streets.
Quote:
Council approved the zoning and official plan amendments in 2015, but decided the hotel would go ahead only once the developer paid the city $200,000 toward parks or recreational facilities.

The latest plan no longer includes the hotel, according to the consultant's report.

This is my favourite building in Ottawa. I'm pleased this is going ahead, the tower compliment the Medical Arts façade. This building always wanted to be a skyscraper anyway. The vertical lines make it appear much taller than 6 stories ; )

Any way we can force them to knock it down to 22 storeys or (preferably) bump it up to 32 storeys? Why is "27" the answer to life, the universe and everything in it in this town?

Anyone ever been inside? Any origina features left?

Nice to see a historic building re-used basically in its entirety. It would be nice if developers would see this as an example to move away from façadism throughout the city.

Too bad they killed the hotel portion though. I guess they wanted to save the $200,000 (see CBC article posted by danishh).

I noticed fencing has gone up all around the site and trees and shrubbery have been cut down. Looks like they're prepping for excavation

Mmmm.... Are the "medium bronze" panels on the tower slowly becoming "Tribeca Grey"?

This looks like a great project, though I'm disappointed none of the interior will be preserved. Has anyone been inside the building? Does the interior have any heritage features left? Not City defined heritage, but visual heritage.

I was quite worried that they would not find a way to incorporate the fascade but I would say (at least in the renders) their plan looks sound. Another skinny tower from the East. That view from Rideau Centre, Shaw, U of O has changed a ton in the last few years.

I have once a few years ago, but I was only in the hallways, so I don't know if there's more to it in the offices. I don't know if it has heritage value. I remember it was really dark, and looked old and dingy - kind of like a dungeon mixed with pre-war mad scientist lab. I would still like the interior to be kept and renovated, though, because it was sort of cool.
