I'm not sure how I feel about this one. This is the the Chinese we are talking about, so something is going to happen development-wise to the park and the land surrounding it. Whether or not it will be good or bad, I don't know.
I think we're not talking about the real story; a Chinese manufacturer is creating jobs in America. Not only is that ironic; that says a lot about how cheap it is to run a business in Utah...

It would be nice to know what kind of auto manufacturing plant they're talking about? I know the Chinese are interested in entering the auto manufacturing business in a big way, with ambitions to catch up to the Koreans. Even dreaming to emulate the Japanese. It would make sense that they would choose Utah. I've been wondering now for a while when Utah would enter the auto manufacturing industry. From some of the previous States chosen in the recent past, it would seem Utah would be a good fit for a major presence.

I am glad to hear that the Miller Park will continue to exist, and hopefully even be elevated.

I know you probably mean car assembly but Utah does have a big air bag faculty in Brigham City. So we have entered the car industry in that way.

I am bummed that the state didn't try and land Toyota when they were looking to move their American HQ out of Cali. That would of been a huge get for the State. And why are we not landing anything from Tesla?

Nice to know that despite all that money they borrow the U.S they still have some left over for buying up its real estate.

I think we all balked when Sandy said they were going to build 25 story residential towers, especially in the time frame they said they would do it. I still don't think it will get done but you try for 25 and get 12, that's better than trying for 7 and getting 4. I've never loved Sandy's 'downtown' but there are a good number of office buildings there and props to them for pushing the residential component. It should make it feel more like an urban center and not a suburban office park.

Here is something for the complainers here to complain about:

Skyscrapers or high-tech campus — what should replace the Draper prison?
When planning what should replace the prison after it vacates 680 acres in Draper a few years from now, Mayor Troy Walker is dreaming big. Really big. Like skyscraper huge.

He wants to see multiple 50-story buildings anchor a business district that makes downtown Salt Lake City look quaint. He wants the headquarters of a Fortune 500 company and luxury apartments on the land sandwiched between Interstate 15 and Bangerter Highway.

I'm not complaining. I like the mayor's enthusiasm. I'd be really happy if Draper at the very least had a street layout like in the rendering. That would pave the way for more urban developments. He wants high density residential, a mixed use city center, and high density office. That sounds good to me. I even think it's possible, but not at the scale the mayor is thinking. What upsets me about this article is any mention of what the state wants for the area. We all know what a "high-tech campus" will look like. Seas of parking with ugly stubby buildings. I support the mayor's approach and I support a master plan that helps create an urban environment rather than another office park.

10-15 story buildings ok, I can see that. 50-story buildings?......yea right. Hey Mayor, just ask both Sandy and Lehi cities who also had big dreams just how that went for them.

Likly we end up with office parks. Just look at Vista Station.

Building multiple 50story skyscrapers is the only way they make enough money on the land to afford the new prison (which is obviously a joke).

Yeah we can't even get a 40 story building in downtown, I cant imagine the likelyhood of going over 15 floors in Draper. I believe in increased commercial and residential density nodes across the Wasatch Front but it is a little unrealistic to move a prison and expect 50 story skyscrapers to replace it!

I love it when these suburban mayors think they are smarter than nationally reputable city and regional planners and that there city should trump the established metro capital. The absolute arrogance and ignorance of this Mayor is very apparent. It's also upsetting to hear other politicians agreeing with him. This is what is wrong with northern Utah metro development. It's the unwise thinking of many politicians and business leaders that perpetuates unhealthy regional sprawl.

The sales woman I spoke to in the new Dillard's told me that demolition on the old location starts today (September 8th). She didn't know what was going to replace it.

I have been curious over the last while about that as well, just from my digging around I think it is supposed to become a Macy's. Don't quote me on that...but it seems to be what pops uo when I look long enough, I also had someone at one of the stores there tell me they hear a rumor about that a while back. Also Sweet Tooth Fairy just opened a kiosk over by the food court if you haven't had them before you should try them, they have some good cupcakes and sweets.
