The second city that comes to my mind by province.

Corner Brook, NL

Summerside, PEI

(So many nice pictures of this town and none of them shareable... Jesus, b'ys. Relax.)

Saint John, NB

(My favourite city in the Maritimes. Like Montreal, it's one of the few cities I wish I could be from just to feel authorized to love it as much as I do).

Went back home to my corner of the Townships... Took some rural pics. This pic is from early this morning (it was still foggy -- the pic is somewhat white-ish).

Not exactly a "city" but there are nonetheless buildings in the pic. And it's my home region, though I don't live there permanently at the time.

What's in this pic: the church and farms are in Quebec, so is the road, the hills on the left side are New Hampshire, and the foggy mount in the central background is in Vermont.

(My camera isn't high-quality... I go too often in risky environments for it to make sense to buy an expensive one, so apologies for the so-so pic quality.)

It's beautiful. I love borders. So bizarre to me - and always fascinating to imagine why they are where they are.

You might like the Stanstead, QC/Derby Line, VT border crossing.

Before (before 2009 I think)

After

Canusa Ave, the double orange line is the border, left of it is Quebec, right of it is Vermont. It is the only part of the USA/Canada border that runs down a street.

About that...

I don't know if you guys are aware of this, but for a little while the hills that you can see on the left side of my pic (today in NH) were actually an independent republic... basically due to uncertainty over which river exactly was the "NW headwaters of the Connecticut River" that had been agreed upon as be the QC-NH border. This area fell in between and since the US and Canada/UK couldn't agree on borders the residents of the disputed area eventually decided to form their own country.

Google "Indian Stream Republic", you'll see.

Edit: Link for you...

Fascinating, Nicko - that's as cool as some of the low country borders in Europe.

And fascinating stuff, Lio.

I went for a long walk from my apartment in downtown Vancouver to Commercial Drive in East Vancouver. These pics start at MacLean Park in Strathcona and then over the tracks into Grandview Woodlands. I walk the alleys as much as the streets to see what I can see, like new lane way houses, palm trees and vintage hearses.

Great pics Mc. Love the colourful clapboard of course. That grey garage thing reminds me so much of St-Pierre.

St. John's and Copenhagen are kind of sister cities, at least in terms of colour.

Today I went across the bridge into downtown to do some shopping and then came back to Christianshavn. Loving the new neighbourhood.

If you like the history and confusing dichotomy of border regions Signal, you should look up some stuff on the Aroostook War between NB and Maine, and the Republique du Madawaska.

I think there was also something called the "Pig War" (or something like that) in the Gulf Islands of BC.

Of course, Machias Seal Island off the coast of NB is still claimed by both the US and Canada. Canada has a bit of a leg up on this one I think because we have a permanently staffed lighthouse on the island. It is just about the only remaining light house in the country with a permanent keeper, but the reasons for keeping it manned are purely political.......

I wish. I'd love the number of feet on the street one finds in European cities even a fraction our size, and all the more in larger cities such as Copenhagen. The only thing, really, about smaller European cities that I am glad we don't have (at least in my estimation) is that sleepy, fanny pack feeling. There's still an edge here... I think isolation makes it possible. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Copenhagen is ever going to have a lower, working class like ours. Usually it's annoying and awful and provincial and all of that... but it is foundation for the strong sense of community even among the middle and upper class.

Stopped at Mary Brown's for some chicken on my way back to the city today. The overweight, mullet-clad woman behind me was with, presumably, her son. Our entire time waiting in line, she repeated the same thing in various words: "Sure das some special they got on dere luh... sure das almost half price wha...", "9 pieces of chicken for 9 dollars is some good, luh. You won't get dat another place.", "I'm having dat, luh. Whaddaya want? You having chicken too? You want dat what's on special?"

She finally gets to the cash register and she wants all centres (breasts). Missus behind the counter explains she can't do that and the special is only on Mondays anyway.

So they leave... I'm sitting eating my chicken, and the two TEENAGE cashiers working are reading to each other from fliers. "Sobey's got nail polish on. There's shampoo on too.", "Sure Sobey's always got that on. Whas the price?"

The island outside Empire Avenue can be a scary place.

*****

Sounds cool, Moncton, I'll check out what I can find!

Great pics, 1ajs!

Copenhagen's international image has become this sort of foodie/design type thing, but remember this is an old port town. Areas like Vesterbro are historically working class to the degree that when a show like The Killing needs somewhere to put their reformed-hardman/suffering-father-of-a-murdered-girl/slow-boiling-cauldron-of-revenge character, they put him there.

On May 5 every year, residents of Istedgade (the old red-light street through Vesterbro) fly banners that read ""Istedgade overgiver sig aldrig!", or "Istedgade will never surrender", reflecting the pride that working-class district takes in its refusal to submit to Nazi occupation.

I'm not comparing to St. John's because I have never been there and I can tell from your posts that this side of the city is very strong and gives it a big part of its identity. In English, this is absent from Copenhagen's international image but on the ground and for Danes its very much here. You just need to go into any Bodega (old man bars with cheap beer where you can smoke and where they are allowed to stay open 24 hours) to find it.

Check out Forbrydelsen/The Killing's first season for a great show and look at Copenhagen's class-perceptions of itself.

tl;dr? It's not Newfoundland but it's not all Monocle readers and people with stylish lamps.

No such thing as tl;dr for your posts, man. Thanks for the info!

That sounds like exactly the same niche, but a different culture - so, for my purposes, the same. Exciting! There's probably little that could make me want to visit a city more. Copenhagen on the list. Not that any of Europe is ever off it.

And "Istedgade will never surrender" - That's absolutely fantastic. That's basically what the tricolour means for casual, non-political people here. Just a friendly thing like that.

I'd love to be able to access that side of it, though, but the linguistic/cultural barrier, it'll probably be out of reach. Boo.
