I don't think it looks bad I'm just not a fan of that particular siding choice I love that they did a 2 tone and a the zig zag pattern that looks awesome and the rest of the stadium is great I'm just not a fan of the industrial siding look and I hope they don't cut corners like they did with IGF. I don't think i'm alone on that ...That's all, just an opinion

How many Blue Jays fans can you walk up to and they know about that period of baseball on the islands?

We do but many do not.

The Jays are a "modern" invention and the fact they one substantial run in the late 80s and early 90s will forever cement that period in their history. 99% of the old guard of fans from that era were born from that run, none were from the days of baseball on the island. This is why the Blue Jays seldom try to connect to that era of Toronto baseball, whats the point? 92-93 is the only thing that matters.

Yup. To 99.9% of Toronto, baseball pre-1977 is basically something that exists in historical archives. There is some vague awareness that Babe Ruth hit his first homer at Hanlan's Point a century ago, and that's it.

What is the point of attempting to tap into that history when it has nothing to do with the current organization and nothing to do with the fans who didn't grow up with warm and fuzzy memories of Ebbets Field? It just doesn't add up.

Even if the Blue Jays spend $400 million renovating Rogers Centre, it would be half the cost of a similarly sized outdoor stadium.
I agree a new baseball stadium in T.O would be a 700M project without a roof which is not feasible in Toronto and you would never see the downtown location again. Rogers Centre is the perfect skeleton for modernization. With 400M renovation it could easily be one of the best Stadiums in the MLB again. That roof has got to be translucent, the seating configuration has got to be more baseball friendly and natural grass. Those to me are the big 3

I think a good number of Calgarians would take it over McMahon.

Re Potential new Jays' stadium

Yeah, very, very unlikely for the reasons already stated - $$$ being the issue almost entirely.

Skydome, interestingly, is on Crown Land. i.e. Rogers doesn't own the land upon which the stadium sits, so they would not get 'full value' in the event of a sale. A new stadium would have to be financed from scratch, so to speak.

And where a new stadium might fit is another profound issue at play, so, really, renovation is the only real answer.

Considering a move towards real grass at Skydome, I do wonder how far $400m will go. It has been suggested that such a venture is far more expensive than one might imagine - necessary though it is.

As both a baseball and a sports architecture fan, I have hopes that we'll see great improvements to the stadium. While it's a bit of a cliche, the current economic situation won't help and given that expenses are in USD, well, let's not hold our breath for too much...

Is it possible that those sections covering up the "open" framing will somehow still be translucent as per the render? It does just appear to be plain old corrugated tin, but maybe not?

If it is just corrugated tin, that will diminish the final product a bit in my opinion.

However, there is supposed to be a Fatburger franchise so that makes up for it!

From the most recent renderings you can tell pretty clearly that the exterior facade is part corrugated tin and part translucent material.

The current pictures represent the parts of the rendering that were always suppoed to be corrugated tin. So I would still expect the empty spots to be translucent as per the rending.

Edit: here you can see the glass and metal courtesy of homer a few pages back

Ideal location and "good bones" -- exactly the rationale for spending the $$ to renovate BC Place instead of building new. I think most would agree that it was the correct decision.

I would take ANY CFL stadium (except maybe Molson and Skydome) over McMahon.

A little early to be nicknaming it anything considering about 5% of the exterior is complete.

MORE SKYDOME UPGRADES AHEAD

With the naming of new club president Mark Shapiro, talk of future upgrades to Skydome have begun via Stephen Brooks (Jays' Senior VP of Business Operations).

Some highlights as reported by John Lott from the National Post:
*dirt infield (2016)
*natural grass (2018) - 'the wild-card project' as stated by Brooks
*roof membrane to be replaced - may be translucent
*rails used to retract roof to be repaired - will allow roof to open in cooler weather
*all seats replaced; suites upgraded
*Hard Rock Cafe to be renovated as a 'large group area'
*concessions upgraded
*plaza area to be renovated

A little vague. My hope is that, when all is said and done, it's a 'good' baseball park. We shall see...

National Post article.

Dump the Hard Rock, its a dated brand that has never had any quality, get something that will attract the now younger crowd that goes to the games now.
