That previous picture of new Mosaic doesn't do it justice, it looks fantastic in person. With the additional mesh cladding in certain areas, other finishings, as well as the Tyndall stone it will look fantastic. Here are some more pics in different lighting.

But if you want to build a retractable roof stadium like Rogers Centre you're looking at upwards of a billion dollars. And construction rates in Ontario are higher than in Michigan.

Not to mention you aren't going to get a better location than Rogers Centre. The land it sits on is actually owned by the government of canada and leased to Rogers, so there may be stipulations on whether it can be town down or not. That plus there is probably enormous pressure from the government and city to not tear down a stadium that was publicly funded.

Dont forget that BC Place was upgraded rather than torn down as well. So it isn't that hard to imagine.

They won't need a retractable roof for a baseball-only stadium. It would be a waste of money.

If they can fix up Skydome and make it more intimate, cover the cement exterior with something more warm like bricks, and make the roof translucent - then go for it. But if that's not going to happen and they're still going to spend 400m to do it - it would be money better spent on a true baseball stadium.

^ Makes sense. Skydome has arguably as many skyboxes as the Jays are going to need, the outfield can easily be refitted for the latest generation clubs/patios/porches/whatever other revenue-generating amenities are standard these days, seating capacity is good and can probably be reduced a bit if need be. Most importantly, location cannot and will not ever be beaten.

A little bit of upgrading is all Skydome really needs. And frankly I'm kind of glad that we generally don't play that game of demolishing 20 year old stadiums in Canada.

You wouldn't be able to build a new 45,000 seat baseball stadium for $400 million nowadays. Target Field started construction 8 years ago and it cost $550 million. The new Braves stadium will cost $650 million and it will seat 41,000. I'm sure a new stadium in Toronto would cost $650 - $700 million and that would be without a dome. Even if the Blue Jays spend $400 million renovating Rogers Centre, it would be half the cost of a similarly sized outdoor stadium.

agreed with both the above posts!

I bet labour is also cheaper in Georgia than Ontario, pushing costs up even higher.

renovating Rogers Centre is the way to go IMO

I agree also - reno skydome, don't implode it.

(Atlanta is a joke in terms of how often they build brand new stadiums.)

Toronto people won't show up for games if its cold and raining. The Jays need a roof, this isn't Minni with a fan base with tough skin. Even in Detroit fans stay away in April, the Tigers have abysmal attendance in the first few weeks of the season. I am never in the camp of stuff like roofs when they are not needed but Toronto is one of the few markets that needs one and IMO since Canadians hate maintaining grass I think the only way they can keep healthy grass growing is a hybrid indoor light and outdoor system. For whatever reason Canadian stadiums (I suspect costs) can't keep top quality grass growing.

Next the idea of bricks is not ideal IMO. Skydome actually fits well into the area of concrete and glass from all the condos. All they need to do is add more glass to it to make it more bright and make the roof translucent for grass and its fine.

What baseball history does Toronto have to warrant bricks and some retro style? That trend is dated now (funny to think that) as all of the newest parks in D.C. Minni, Miami, San Diego, have gone away from the exclusive retro trend.

I am split on this. One one side it is what it is.. cheap tin roof siding .. but on the other hand the alternative would of been to leave the drab concrete which would of been worse.

It will look like the Sportplex/Fieldhouse in a dreary winters day, hopefully the lighting feature will be all over the stadium to try and warm it up.

I like the idea of a reno, the Skydome was (is) a historic building. First functioning retractable roof stadium and a design that is still visually striking 25+ years after it was completed. A translucent roof and modernized interior and mechanics and it's good to go for another 30-40 years. Lots of good memories there, I'm glad the little critters in my family will grow up to experience it as well.

There is definitely baseball history in Toronto as you point out, but the whole retro baseball stadium trend is pretty well done. Retro elements are still around, but no one is designing stadiums to look like faux 1920s parks anymore. To build something like that now would be to have a stadium that looks behind the times on the very day that it opens.

Toronto shouldn't get caught in that nostalgia trap, especially in a city that has baseball history but isn't beholden to it the same way that some US cities are.

ya the retro look is overdone and wouldn't suit rogers centre.

the exterior needs more glass, less concrete. translucent roof similar to the new vikings stadium. grass. updated concourses. new seats. and sprucen up the outfield.

good to go
