All I see is loss. Yes, it looks like a dump to some people but for a few of us who have lived here all our lives and have gone by this corner thousands of times, it's a loss. There are so many years of stories and people and history behind those walls. People live and work there.
When I was skulking around in the alley getting pics of the back, a nice, well dressed, normal looking lady came along with a bag of groceries. She crossed over to the wooden stairs and climbed up to what I presume was her home and went in. The one with flowers, pink flamingos and prayer flags. She probably noticed what I was doing and thought now they're coming to take pictures of it before it's gone.

You have a real appreciation for cities and urban life; it's clearly evident in your photos. Like you, I see tremendous loss. So many parts of the city are becoming sterile and homogenized. It's losing its soul.
losing those buildings wouldn't matter so much if the small retail spaces were replaced. take away 10 modest commercial spaces and replace them with 3 large spaces? so the net gain is more residents but far fewer spaces for entrepreneurship, street life, neighborhood options and vitality, and the rest. sounds about right, your pretty classic vancouver move that means those spaces will go to formula retail operations, 90% certainly. you want to say that the "soul" of a place is the people but when most of your non-work hours are spent in formula retail establishments that could just as easily be in calgary or the airport, you're staring into the void. it's pretty weird when i see discussions on this board considering which chain restaurant or bar would best fit into which space. even these large spaces here would be okay if they were guaranteed not to be formula retail, but that's not even on anyone's radar. bah.
A tower behind Holy Rosary Cathedral on Richards Street.
Presumably residential since it has balconies.
Blank wall facing south anticipating redevelopment of the adjacent building.
I how that Richard Street tower is positioned on the lot, but the black wall raises eyebrows. Also, it isn't very tall despite being 30+ floors as it is similar in height to the office tower to east wich is not very tall.
Which hole are you talking about? Do you mean the empty lot next to my tower at Beatty and Nelson? Or is this that black bridge tower we found about few weeks ago (The Arc)?
That's the lot I was thinking about. I think the sign on it talks about 20-something floor tower. Too bad there won't be anything taller going there. A 40+ floor tower would look great amidst all the short towers in the area. Now it will be exactly the same as the neighbouring towers (like Max 2 on right).

PS - the Holy Rosary site is probably limited by the same viewcone that limits the Bay Parkade site.
I wonder if they could in-fill to the north and south of the 401 West Georgia tower (Aon)?
