Ultima - started before arena, but was planned during the arena discussions I believe. In any case, it is not part of the arena / Ice District project itself.

The symphony tower Is incredible I have looked at buying a condo in the building.

at the same time i was introduced to the fox towers and my personal favorite the pearl which I will most likely reside in the next 2 years

Calgary should just build a copy of Edmonton's arena & Regina's stadium and save the design fees.

I think Calgary Should look for a Videotron centre and an IGF for 570M

They were gonna throw 200M of their own money into the project anyway.
Bump you're original 250M ticket tax to 270M. Get the other 100M from the city from a CRL. Build them on the same location as the Saddledome to keep costs down. Calgary doesn't need a $900M project
They just need an Outdoor stadium close to the same capacity of IGF But honestly a fancier/bigger full wrap THF and a rink the equal quality to Videotron centre would do great in Calgary. If You built a scaled back Stadium that you could add to later (TD/THF) Your costs would continue to drop.

I have a feeling the 250M ticket tax is a big problem because they want the city to front that cash.

^ A THF clone would be a bit underwhelming for a western city... I hope Calgary aims a bit higher than that. Calgary should have a decent quality stadium.

That's too bad. There's going to be so many trade-offs on both sides of the football/field house side for either to be really great. Calgary could do so much more with $200 million on the field house side of the whole equation.

^ I don't get why Calgary is wedded to the idea of building a lame indoor stadium instead of a spectacular outdoor one for about the same pricetag. As has been pointed out before, the fieldhouse aspect of the stadium could easily be met with a far smaller and more modestly priced facility.

I think it will as well, I'm just wondering if KK knows that there are people who are disappointed with the stadium/fieldhouse setup. Externally I have no problem with it, but with no info to go on in these early days, we all are making assumptions about the interior and how "80's high school" the concept seems.

So either they are going to be doing some high tech stuff with the stands to make it intimate or hopefully they will be going back to the drawing board the next time a more specific proposal comes forth.

Again, I ask the Calgary folk, is it coming out publicly that this is a lame design (the interior) or is Joe Calgarian happy with it?

You can't just get a CRL anywhere, this isn't Edmonton. There certainly isn't one available on the Stampede grounds nor is there space for two arenas and a stadium. Why would the Stampede allow someone to come in and take up a bunch of their land?

We don't know where the $250mm will come from, the Flames have not said. If they expect the City to upfront it there will be a massive backlash.

AFAIK the society that has been pushing for a new fieldhouse for years had that 200 million figure in mind so I figure they already priced out what they thought they needed. KK et al have jumped on the bandwagon and are trying to kill two birds with one stone, which is great but it has to be better executed.

I would say no. Most people are keeping a somewhat open mind as it is a concept but at the same time are questioning why this announcement could not have happened 2 years ago. If you were paying attention, other than the funding there was no new information presented.

At first everyone was caught up in the hype of announcement day and the excitement but now people are able to look critically at what is proposed and see it as a project that limits itself by trying to couple itself to some long term City objectives.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding the CoC taking ownership of the arena and other facilities. Kent Wilson from Flames Nation put it best with this analogy... that it's like a friend coming to you and asking to buy her a car so that she can become an Uber driver. You'll be the owner of the car but she'll take care of it and keep all the profits. At the end you get the car back when she's done with it. Arenas are a lot harder to sell then cars though.
