Just a minor thing, but I noticed that the new sidewalk on southside McDermot near Albert is open and they're working on the other side of the street. You wouldn't think it would make much of a difference, but somehow it does... just adds a certain polish to the block. I like it.

A little unrelated but something I noticed the other day is how nice the north side of Bannatyne between King and Princess would be if they switched the parking and bike lane around - you'd have a really nice pedestrian and active transport promenade going there.

I'm still unsure how I feel about this. While I do lean to the side that it's nice and polished and better for accessibility, etc., but you do lose some character and uniqueness getting rid of the bricks... however they were never maintained properly so in winter the concrete will be much better.

It seems like they will also be doing the whole south side of Bannatyne and the corner of Bann/Arthur/Albert also, judging by street markings. It'll be interesting to see if those streets remain brick.

Also, does anybody know what the deal is with tree replacement on these streets. Lots of trees removed with stumps remaining, curious to see if they will be replaced when sidewalks are done. Corydon is another weird area for this... some of the missing tree planters were just paved over last year while some were rebuilt/kept, but there's still no trees in them.

Very true, walk this everyday and I love the feel of the sidewalk. It looks marked for reconstruction as well, but I hope they leave the planters as is.

While I was bored at work last week I did a Street View tour of the Exchange comparing this spring to 2007-10... So many benches in the area have been removed after streetscaping and not replaced, really kinda 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 and leaves some big empty spaces for no reason. Two obvious ones are corner of Albert & McDermot and that weird pocket-park-turned-poorly-designed-bike-rack at Arthur & Bann... I actually think having that as a big bike lot is a good idea, it's just horribly executed and holds like 8 bikes.

Walking over by the 'Victoria Parkette' noticed a sign saying 'guess who is coming!' had been added to the real estate sign. Anyone know what's up? Does that mean the building or the green space?

Yeah this is year 2 of 3 in the plan to replace pretty much ALL sidewalks in the Exchange. They're moving pretty quickly this year, I even saw people working on the McDermot sidewalk at 730 pm yesterday.

Looks like most of what will happen next year is the Northeast Exchange new streetscaping on James, Pacific, etc. and any other non-primary routes left over.

I was actually walking down Rorie while they were doing this. I overheard the supervisor point out to the worker that she marked two blocks further than she needed to. So, I'd take some of those markings with a grain of salt.

Also, heard a rumour that Patagonia bought a building and plans to open a shop in the Exchange. Could be related...?

Bringing normcore to the local hipster population?

171 is in the Ashdown Warehouse... is it possible that they just bought a CRU? Because if it was an entire building then it's not Patagonia.

Exactly, but I can't see where they would have bought otherwise, and can't find any info on the Ashdown rezoning (it's the space in between Aveda and Hermanos. Huge, but not great street access for retail).

Two points of interest I'm keeping an eye out for, in this case probably not related.

^ There are a few buildings in the west Exchange that would be a bit more suitable for a retailer to buy... the east Exchange CRUs tend to be at the bottom of larger buildings. And yeah, Ashdown isn't really the best place for a retailer to be given that the CRUs have little fenestration and sidewalk presence... the opposite of what a retailer interested in displaying wares and enticing passers-by would want.

At any rate, it'll be interesting to see if they turn up in the Exchange.

Yeah that Ashdown space would seem a bit odd, but it's the only vacant space in that building so it'd be nice to fill it. The West Exchange seems to make way more sense for pretty much any type of retail.

Also 72 Princess above Baukorb, which was often used for parties and events, is going to become a lounge/bar called "The Attic" — I believe it will be just the third floor. I don't know if it's just a coincidence but it may have something to do with this city "crackdown" on permits and that.

East Exchange just doesn't have the critical mass of retail space the way that the West Exchange does... Waterfront Drive and that short little stretch of McDermot are about the only exceptions.

Good news re: 72 Princess. Nice to bring it out into the open... a sign or two will make the building look a little more lived in.

I'm a bit disappointed by the entire block east from Baukorb (where they used to be)... I was hoping that something would have happened in there by now.

Yeah, but judging on the rental signs whoever owns it uses... it seems like it may be the wrong people marketing/managing that building.

Talked to the Blacklist guys today, they got grant money from the Exchange storefront program, they said they have some really cool plans to fix up the outside of the (former ragpickers) building for they're lounge. They want it done before they open (probably first week of October), so it should be starting right away.

Turns out it is Brick's Furniture... kind of odd, as they had been announcing their "closing down"/ retiring sale.

where one find out whos doing the 72 princes stuff as i spent the last yr and a half in the space love to bring my knowlige of that space to the table

also be a shame to see the recording studios get torn out in there
