I seem to recall that a road diet was suggested in the Downtown Moves study a few years ago, partly to accommodate LRT generated pedestrian volumes.
I don't think we have one yet.

I believe Albert & Slater are both pegged for segregated cycling lanes (along with Wellington and the existing ones on Laurier creating quite the cycling grid!), which would probably come from the bus lanes.

It's possible that the city may decide to open up those lanes for traffic to offset the loss of lanes on Queen Street due to bigger sidewalks in the shorter term, though.

My preference would be to keep them as bus lanes for STO. STO buses could be rerouted off Rideau/Wellington, with STO using Waller to get down to the Mac Bridge and then Bay/Lyon to get back up to Gatineau. That would free up space on Rideau/Wellington for the inner city locals making them run better. Also deals with the overload of buses at the Rideau Centre's Rideau Street stops.

The only OC locals operating on Albert/Slater are routes 16 and 85 (Transitway makes up all the rest). One or both may continue as local routes on Albert/Slater. Personally, I'd keep the 16 there and for the 85, have it go to Gatineau via Lebreton station.

I too would like to see the STO buses diverted to Albert/Slater and the Mac Bridge. However I think it makes more sense for the buses to continue along Albert to Booth to allow for a transfer at Pimisi Station.

I think the STO does some sort of thing where buses serve both DT Hull and DT Ottawa which requires buses to use the Portage bridge specifically, but I may be wrong.

That's correct. Many STO routes serve both downtowns.

Is that the first picture we've seen of a completed tunnel section, minus the tracks and whatnot of course?

It would be interesting to see a video of how they pump concrete into that form and how they move it after it's set. I wonder if the formwork structure is on some sort of track, the photo is kind of blurry and doesn't show much of the ground

That's why I provide the reference link at the bottom of my posts... so that you can go to the original page and click on the photos to view the larger ones.

The Lyon station cavern doesn't seem to be that large, I know a lot of people who would feel really claustrophobic in that space. It looks barely wide enough for two trains and very narrow platforms.

I don't think it's the station itself we're seeing in that photo, but just the tunnel.

That photo is just the running tunnel. That photo can't be showing any platforms because platforms wouldn't be shaped like that.

Confederation Line work prompts Rideau Street restrictions

The Ottawa Citizen
Published on: August 21, 2015 | Last Updated: August 21, 2015 2:28 PM EDT

Starting next Friday, new traffic restrictions will be implemented on Rideau Street between Sussex Drive and Dalhousie Street as part of the massive O-Train Confederation Line project.

The restrictions — in place until the line opens in 2018 — are required due to construction of the Rideau Station entrances and vent shafts.

Motorists and cyclists will be detoured and detour signage will be in place. The taxi stand on Rideau Street will be relocated to George Street, east of William Street.

Under the restrictions, one lane in each direction will remain open for exempt vehicles only: OC Transpo and STO buses, taxis, delivery vehicles and light rail transit construction vehicles.

Businesses will be open as usual and pedestrian access will continue, except for the south sidewalk between Sussex and the signalized pedestrian crossing at the Rideau Centre entrance.

OC Transpo will continue to operate regular routes and schedules along Rideau Street using existing stops. For more information, please visit octranspo.com.

There will be changes to Outaouais bus service. Visit sto.ca for details.

Once completed, Rideau Station will have an east entrance in the future Scotiabank building at Rideau and William streets, a west entrance integrated into the Rideau Centre at the corner of Colonel By Drive and Rideau Street, and a mid-level entrance with access via the Rideau Centre elevator.

The City of Ottawa has tools on ottawa.ca to help motorists and transit users plan their routes and manage their commute.

As a result, 10-15 minute walks to the nearest bus stop are common but once you get to the bus stop, you're never waiting too long as the buses are almost all 10-15 minute frequency all day long even on Sunday evenings and such, and the bus ride isn't long--you can go halfway across the city in maybe 15 minutes. Having seen it, and used it, in person, I can say it's way better than our system of having buses come close to everyone's doors but only coming every 30-60 minutes and taking half an hour just to get out of the area.

The 2011 service reorganization/cut did make a bit of a push in that direction, but not enough.
A 10-15 minute walk, plus a 10-15 minute headway, equals a 20-30 minute effective wait for a bus if you don't get your timing just right.

I'm not sure that's much of an improvement.
