I think it could look great or it could look really cheesy/crappy - no in-between. It's just too hard to judge by the pictures/video... it's not detailed enough.

Exactly. People can argue to the end of the day about which arenas are the best, but there is a top tier that most of the new arenas are in and once you've reached that level you're in with the rest of them.

If it's true that the Flames are looking at the XL centre or the Consol centre as the model then it will most likely be world class.

If it did, The American Airlines Arena in Dallas would be the best arena by default - $400 million in 2000, which I'm guessing would be $700 million if constructed now.

I have to say Im a little surprised with the size of honda centres new board. 20x30 according to the twitter account for the ducks, For such a big building I expected bigger. The screens themselves aren't that much bigger than Winnipegs new one.

honda centre isn't a big building at all. its capacity is just over 17,000

the interior seating bowl isn't that big

When the idea was first floated several years ago, they invited four local architectural firms to provide conceptual drawings of what the centre could look like for discussion purposes. This is fairly close to one of the designs, but it isn't as elegant as my favourite one was. I agree that the colours will liven up the core, but that the final product will depend heavily on the quality of the building materials. The project will cost $104M total, but for 9,088 seats that's $11,440 per seat. I don't know how that compares to other arena projects in the country........

We were talking the price of the arena, not arena+winter gardens and whatever else. Inflation isn't going to be much of a factor. I would be the whole project comes in at around $750 Million

I'm impressed with a project of the magnitude happening in Moncton but I cant say I'm a fan of the design. Laval is seeing a simulair arena built at the same price and it looks way better. Why is Moncton building a smaller canadian tire centre dressed up as a carnical tent? I really think they should reconsider

Well, Rogers will likely be in the running for naming rights for the new Moncton events centre too. They have over 1000 employees in the city. Another good possibility would be Molson/Coors. They have a brewery in Moncton.

It was over built, the Arena in Dallas, b because of that it has staying power as it can easily (and has been) changed and renovated over time. Plus the brick will age well on that thing, it might get 45+ years of use.

McCain Foods is based in New Brunswick, too. McCain Centre has a nice ring to it...

McCain is based mostly in western NB. There are lots of Irving interests in Moncton though like Majesta/Royale Tissues, Cavendish Farms, Midland Transport etc. They could be possibilities, especially since the Moncton Wildcats are owned by Robert IRVING.

New Moncton building will probably be Irving. Saint John's centre will be receiving a new name shortly and that will surely determine what the future name in Moncton will be. Sea Dogs owned by a McCain and Wildcats owned by an Irving.

Perhaps, but I'm partial to Majesta/Royale Centre, there's a certain "majesty" to the name. Some wags on the events centre thread in the Atlantic Canada section however have suggested that if this is chosen as the name, that it wouldn't be too long before the building gets nicknamed the "Toilet Bowl"

Majesta/Royale Centre has a certain logic and symmetry to it:

- Robert Irving owns the Moncton Wildcats and is also the CEO of Majesta/Royale Tissues (amongst other Irving companies)

- The new $1.5M tiger exhibit at the Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton is sponsored by Majesta/Royale (blatant corporate tie-in).
- The mascot of the Moncton Wildcats is "Tomar the Tiger", the beloved star of the zoo who expired of old age several years ago. The new tiger exhibit (Very high quality) is dedicated to his memory.

I could see the name "Majesta/Royale Centre" emblazoned on the crest of the new events centre, along with a tiger logo (perhaps those two playful tiger kittens you see on Royale tissue commercials on TV).

As I said in a previous post, there are a couple of other leading possibilities that I can think of:

- Rogers Centre - they are one of the largest employers in town (somewhere between 1,000-1,200 employees), and own a couple of buildings nearby in the downtown core. Wildcats games are carried on Rogers TV. Calling the new arena the Rogers Centre however would be sooooo boring. I mean, how many Rogers Centres does Canada need!

- Molson/Coors Centre - there is a long history of beer companies sponsoring naming rights for sports facilities. The tie-in is obvious, and they could negotiate exclusivity for their products in the on site concessions. Molson/Coors most modern brewery in North America opened in Moncton about 5-6 years ago.

I guess it depends on how deep any Irving/McCain/Molson contribution is... I would think sponsorship would be what is a main factor of the naming rights and as it stands, Local/Provincial/Federal money is by far the most significant.

I think they should call it simply: "The Hub".
