As a runner, you have no idea what I would give to have a running track in my apartment. If only these were condos...

That's good news. But it doesn't explain "The Mystery of the Purloined Crane."

Mayor Reed wants to shutter Peachtree and Pine homeless facility, build new one

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed on Tuesday called for the closure of the Peachtree and Pine homeless facility due to health issues related to the building and revealed he wants to build a new shelter to house 300 to 400 homeless people.
“We are really going to have to take on this issue around Peachtree and Pine,” Reed said at a luncheon talk to members of the Commerce Club. “Peachtree and Pine and the behavior that goes on around it has been going on for too long.”Reed said he came to that conclusion when he was contacted by the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and told about the health issues related to the building – a longtime source of consternation in Atlanta’s business and civic circles.

“Peachtree and Pine is one of the leading sites for tuberculosis in the nation,” Reed said, recalling his meeting with CDC officials. “They laid out how tuberculosis cases, not in Georgia, but across America, are being traced back to Peachtree and Pine. I’m using today as a moment. It has been tolerated for too long.”

Reed said he plans to build a “best-in-class” facility for the homeless to serve the 300 to 400 people who currently stay at the Peachtree and Pine building, which the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless operates.

The mayor also said he would put a police and fire station on the property, which he said the city would acquire through eminent domain.

I support having effective housing for the homeless in Atlanta, but I'm thrilled to hear what the mayor said! He is spot on. I'm excited to read more about the new facility and the prospects for new life in that part of town. It's such a critical area between downtown and midtown.

I am assuming that "Georgia Tech" is referring to University House which is soon to be occupied. I thought it was curious how close the Crane was to that building when I saw the picture that was posted above. Hopefully this is just a minor setback but I don't know much about construction.

Not good, looks like they are moving the crane off of the property.

They are trying to reconfigure where a crane would be able to sit and be efficient during construction. Cranes are in such high demand these days that I am sure they took those pieces and moved them to another job site and put Modera in line for the next one.

UH is a private development-- not owned by Georgia Tech. I would guess that they are moving the crane, which will necessitate pouring another foundation, etc.-- a pretty big screw up by the contractor--

Did anyone get to last night's Midtown DRC meeting?

Were any of you able to attend last night's Midtown DRC meeting?

There were 5 proposals to be discussed, so we should have some interesting news on some of them once meeting info is disseminated.

http://www.midtownatl.com/_files/docs/agenda-08-11-15---final.pdf

Otherwise, Midtown Alliance usually publishes it on the DRC section of their website within a few days of the meeting.

I did not, but they have an image of the dual branded hotel on the recap page. It has not been updated with comments yet. UPDATE Comments now included.

Lol @ people thinking the dual-brand hotel was going to be tall and we come to find out it's essentially two midrise towers. Really disappointing and just terrible use of land in the area considering 14th Street is an elite street to be on.

Noble dual branded 14th street hotel details

The roughly 300-room hotel would blend two Marriott products: the AC Hotel by Marriott, a contemporary European-inspired flag, with Moxy hotel, Marriott’s newest brand that targets the Millennial traveler with smaller rooms and more affordable prices. Moxy would be a new brand for the Atlanta market. The AC Hotel would face 14th Street, while the Moxy hotel would front 13th Street. A pedestrian connection is planned to connect 13th and 14th, providing needed access for those walking between the Crescent Avenue entertainment and dining district, to the office buildings and Woodruff Arts Center along 14th and 15th streets

Well, its a little shorter than I wished for, of course, but will no doubt be fine for the area. I like the connector between 13th and 14th.

That's across the street from a field and two blocks from a Shell station... I'm not sure where people have gotten the idea 14th should only have world-renowned super towers when the only notable building fronting it is the Four Seasons. Peachtree is probably the only street in this city people specifically seek to be on.
