From CBC:

Moncton downtown centre decision expected from council today
Special public council meeting about funding of proposed $107-million project to be held at 4 p.m.
CBC News Posted: Aug 12, 2015 6:00 AM AT|
Last Updated: Aug 12, 2015 6:00 AM AT

A special public meeting has been called for 4 p.m., during which council is expected to vote on the proposed funding plan and long-term financial implications of the project.

Council could also possibly award the contract, based on its earlier request for proposals.

On Aug. 4, Moncton received approval from the provincial government's Municipal Capital Borrowing Board to obtain up to $95.4 million in loans for the project, although the city has stated it only plans to borrow about $39 million.

In July, the provincial government announced it would contribute $21 million.

The city has purchased the former Highfield Square property on Main Street as the site for the proposed centre.

Bird Construction and Ellis Don have each submitted bids for the complex.

The 7,500-seat centre would become the new home of the Moncton Wildcats, of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey. The team currently plays out of the 40-year-old Moncton Coliseum.

I would think that if the motion to build the events centre passes this evening then it will be time to rename this thread to [Moncton] Events Centre (Approved)

That would be a depressing final seat count. Hopefully the winning bid has an increased number of seats...

Given that no number has actually been announced, that 7500 number is just something pulled out of the air...

And yes, with good news today I think a thread name change might very well be in order

On the CBC article, they have an up to date Twitter thing in it and Jennifer Choi mentioned that it was said it will take 4 hours this meeting.

Looks like bird construction will be winning the bid.

Congratulations! About damn time this got sorted out.

9000 seats is good. 10k would have been nicer, but it's a major step up from the 7.5 originally RFP'ed.

And here come the renders... I think SSP just crashed Roger's servers. Suddenly it's slowed to a crawl.

What Renders I see do look good. Not sure I like the Red /Green/ Blue band colour scheme, but I love that the building is angled.

Real nice 3D Rendering video of how it fits into the downtown; as well as the A and B retail areas. It's going to be a major change to that end of the downtown.

Here's a link from the CBC Reporter's twitter.

This is the CBC Reporter at the meeting. She's got pictures of the renders as well.

According to the Mayor, with all seating added in (club, suite and party), the seating capacity will be 10,000!

Not a huge fan of the class curtain wall in the render, but I'm sure it can look better..

it looks really great! Congratulation Moncton!

I wonder how many stories the building at the corner is and also are they going to build the retail/condo at the same time as the arena?

And, not only did city council approve the project, they also voted by a margin of 8-1 to confirm Bird as the winning bid for the construction of the centre.

Everything is a go!!

The initial vote was 8-3. At least one, and looks like 2 of the disproving councillors left after the vote and didn't return, hence the 8-1-2 vote for Bird.

It's great to see the title now saying "Approved" in this thread.

Completion Estimate is Summer 2018, to be open September 2018.
