That textured part on the robson/granville corner is just strange. I'll be interested to see how that's finished, but it feels pretty finished already

I believe they are trying to mimic a 60s cast concrete motif that was popular when the building was first built. However the original architecture was very sparse and had none of these motifs. Other department stores from the same era spent a bit more time on details. It feels strange because of they way they applied it, the pattern clashes with the pattern of the stone facade and the window spandrel. Hopefully the design of this building will be simplified and streamlined with future alterations.

A fair example from the 60s is The Bay store at Guildford mall in surrey (although now neglecting its original design)

It's hard to see from the pictures but the "textured" part on the Robson/Granville corner is actually flat. It's just a poster made to look like a 3 dimensional pattern. It remains to be seen what they're going to put in there on a permanent basis.

I took a quick walk through the now open new section of the mall and I think they have the actual pattern material used inside in the escalator lobby. Have to double check that though, I may be wrong. I was pretty sure the stuff inside is the real deal.

Yup, that's right.
The wallpaper on the outside just replicates an actual textured relief on the ceiling above and wall next to the escalators - looks good.

Exactly the problem, needs to be far better than 'fine' on such a prominent and visible corner in our city centre.

Had the building been maintained and not altered with the addition of the ugly upper floors, it would look much better than the redesign. I'll take a clean, crisp, white modern box any day over a jumbled, confused collection of left-over parts that serve no purpose whatsoever except to ruin of one of the most prominent corners in our city. And having a classy department store like Nordstrom on this corner doesn't make up for this.
