I don't think it is, but with a material like that, I KNOW that it really is a matter of taste so I get it (personally, I hate exposed brick....like with a passion). My former boss was renting a beautiful 2 bedroom at 600 Fairbanks and invited a number of us there for a bbq, perhaps a year after it was completed. It was pretty spacious, had some beautiful views, but the units were designed in a way that maximized visibility of optimum view corridors so it added to the excitement of living in a building like that.

When you hire a big name architect it's not just for cache or notoriety, but (hopefully), you also get what you pay for because they represent a sum positive of experience, knowledge, talent and ego (it helps, sort of) and consider many design issues that a lesser architect may forgo.

I'm with you with the hatred of exposed brick. I've always hated it, not just now since its been "in vogue" for 20 years. If there's brick in my house and I can, it's getting painted. Painted brick I like.

I happened to be bicycling on lower Michigan tonight, and saw the concrete trucks unloading into the concrete pumps for this building. Somehow it never occurred to me that Michigan's lower level extended that far south.

Actually goes even further than that, to about Lake Street, with very low clearances. Lower Beaubien stretches to Randolph Street with a dead end as well.
