I always wanted NYC to have a Hong Kong like feel to it, and with supertalls on numerous flanks of the harbor, its become a reality.

The direction the city is going with supertalls is on the right track. There placement also happens to be aesthetically pleasing too.

Brooklyn's skyline is already respectable as viewed from the harbor. After its current boom, it might just be able to boast being one of the USA's top ten. Manhattan, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami, Seattle, LA, Houston, Philly, Boston and Atlanta are what pop into mind first. But this beast is also waking:

I agree. I think its nice that taller structures are appearing outside of Manhattan. I kinda like that. Gives even more bulk to a already massive skyline. I'm just waiting for the boom to really revitalize Newark. There's some activity going on there, but not on the level of JC, and I'd like to see even more skyscrapers in NJ largest city. Honorable mentions to LIC as well which will look like DoBro in a few years as construction signs litter the area.

Possibility of 1000-1200 feet is a tease. Although this sounds like a recipe for fierce NIMBY opposition. In the end though, a potential such as this could be a catalyst for other such towers essentially making DoBro an extension of Lower Manhattan. With lots of space, lots of potential.

There's no one really living around this general area. I doubt there would be any NIMBY opposition. NIMBYs don't really care about areas where they don't live.

And the tower is as-of-right, so it doesn't matter. The developer can built as tall as he wants.

This building is good to go. Most of this area is commercial which means zero complaints. .

Just for people new to the project, the site of the likely supertall is 340 Flatbush Avenue Extension and not the Junior's bakery property at 386 Flatbush. Some posts should probably be moved over there since Junior's has stated they are not selling their property anytime soon (as far as we know) (or just combine the threads as the discussion is not necessarily off topic).

Brooklyn getting a 1,000FT + and LIC getting a 915FT Tower at Queens Plaza.. Signature supertall and almost supertall in the outer boros. If you haven;t noticed over the last 5-10 years..It's not just Manhattan..the waterfront from Long Island City down to below the Brooklyn Bridge has had some much construction already and has dozens of new big projects in the works!

This NYC construction boom is just insanely AWESOME!!!

Never underestimate NYC's NIMBYs. Remember Hudson Yards? Nobody lived there, either. Hudson Yards was supposed to have unlimited FAR, but this was nixed because of NIMBYs.

That said, I do think that since this site is as-of-right, the NIMBYs will cry but nothing will come of their complaints.

Brooklyn may soon get a tower nearly as tall as the Empire State Building

Brooklyn could soon have a residential skyscraper as tall as the Empire State Building.

Developer Michael Stern, the builder of one of the tallest luxury condo towers on Manhattan's Billionaires' Row, and real estate developer Joe Chetrit have struck a $90 million deal to acquire the former Dime Savings Bank of New York, located adjacent to the famed restaurant Junior's in downtown Brooklyn.

The bank at 9 Dekalb Ave. is a 150-year-old landmarked Neo-Roman building with a domed roof and an ornate interior. But perhaps more important than the building, which could become a prime retail location for an upscale brand like Apple, are the development rights that come with it: roughly 300,000-square-feet.

Mr. Stern could use them to build a tower next door at 340 Flatbush Avenue Extension, a property he owns in partnership with Mr. Chetrit. Combined with existing air rights, a nearly 600,000-square-foot tower could rise there.

No building has ever eclipsed 1,000 feet in any of the boroughs outside Manhattan and only a handful of towers have crossed that mark in Manhattan, though that list is growing. One source familiar with the deal suggested that Mr. Stern could build a tower potentially higher than the Empire State Building, whose spire stands at 1,454 feet. Only one other residential tower plans to soar that high, a 1,775-foot-tall building being developed by Extell Development, which is currently under construction in Manhattan on West 57th Street, known as Billionaires' Row.

A more likely outcome is a tower that is as tall as the Empire State Building itself, minus its antenna. That's a cool 1,250 feet. A source familiar with the deal said the tower will likely be between 1,000 feet and 1,200 feet tall.

According to published reports, the tallest tower in Brooklyn is 388 Bridge St. at 590 feet tall—half the size of what Mr. Stern may have planned for his site—followed by The Brooklyner, which is 514 feet tall.

^ Very exciting times for Brooklyn between this and City Point Phase 3.

If this thing actually turns out to be in the range they are talking about, Brooklyn is gonna need some stuff in the 700-900ft range to help bridge the gap between it and the current crop of 500-600ft towers currently popping up all over down there.

Exciting times. Its about time that the outer boroughs push into supertall territory. Stern, like Barnett, needs statues to commemorate his skyscraper efforts because he has the motivation to think big.

This would really be incredible. A tower with such a height would really expand NYC skyline and compliment Manhattan's perfectly.

I hope this is the beginning for more to come for Brooklyn! If Brooklyn was a city all by its lonesome self, it would be the 4th most populous city in the US of A. Brooklyn deserves this.
