Well the flight returns on a CR9 for the two weeks around Christmas, but that's it at this point. It's amazing how much the US carriers have neglected/hacked YOW since the mergers (AA gone from ORD, US gone from CLT, US and DL both down to a mere 2x/day to PHL & DTW respectively)...but they've done that to countless mid-size US airports too. Only UA has roughly maintained capacity, but even with them it's a real head-scratcher that their current earliest departure of the day to IAD is at 1000!
On a few separate notes:
1) TODAY WestJet launch daily year-round Q400 service to YQM and increase service to YHZ to 2x/day and YHZ will become year-round with the Q400 sticking around throughout the winter months. It's incredible to think that a decade ago nobody offered nonstop service on YOW-YQM. Now there's 3 airlines with up to 4 flights per day.
2) About a month ago I received an email from Bearskin to do a survey. It looks like they're seriously considering a return the Ottawa marketplace, BUT they're taking a hard look at the Gatineau airport instead of YOW as that was part of the survey. YOW's fees, which are posted on their website, for 19 seaters are ridiculous.
On a further separate note, Halifax is poised to continue to expand its European route network yet again. Condor are going to add a weekly flight to Munich in addition to their Frankfurt service. YHZ will now have (during the summer 2016 season) direct European services to LHR, LGW, KEF, FRA, GLA, DUB/CDG and now MUC vs. LHR & FRA at YOW. I sure hope the YOW Airport Authority's new VP of Business Development can convince some new airlines to fly here and get the Airport Authority to think outside the AC box. YHZ has Condor, Icelandair, Air Transat and Europe Airpost.
Shouldn't YOW do the same and target secondary/leisure carriers too? Europe Airport could operate successfully here at least weekly over the summer months on a 73G. If DUB is the 'pax on-off' "tech stop" for them out of YHZ to CDG, couldn't KEF or St-Pierre, France be a 'pax on-off' "tech stop" on a YOW-CDG routing on a 73G?
I really think Icelandair will fly to the Capital eventually, but not until their 737MAXes start to enter their fleet.
