I believe it's the energy of the city, the image and prestige as well as having magnificent views from the corner offices for the top execs.

Many corporations based in the NY metro are in suburban campuses, such as PepsiCo, IBM, GE, Johnson & Johnson, etc.

I agree. For months, they've been hauling garbage out of these buildings all day and every day. I suspect that actual demo will start by the fall.

No, Garodick thinks the greater midtown re zoning should go through. Vanderbilt corridor is approved so no worries for 1 Vandy and potential nearby towers such as 335 Madison.

He's more concerned with B row near Central Park and UES. The Nordstrom, 220 CPS, Steinway, 520 Park are safe. My worry is the effect for projects such as Park Lane,Calvery Baptist, 143 E. 60th and Sutton tower projects, but I don't see this (capping of height) coming into fruition.

I think, however they will have success capping the UES. Nimby's there are way too influential.

GaraDick and Skallos are in my district and they lost my vote (lol), but maybe I'm to blame cuz I did vote for both of them in the last election. SMH.

Park Avenue is closed to allow for cyclists and pedestrians today, and you can see from the elevated street wrapping around GCT that demo is progressing nicely on the upper floors of the existing structures.

Yeah, I was running summer streets yesterday and saw the wrap and scaffolding all around this building. It seems like it will take a while for this to come down given its close proximity to all of the larger buildings and grand central in the area. I can imagine the sight of a tower this tall rising there.

On the whole - a venerable block of buildings the city will miss.
But they are being sacrificed - in this case - for a much greater good.

Me too. This was a perfect little square block that screamed "NEW YORK CITY" from every window.

It sure would hurt less if the replacement wasn't an awful eyesore. Thanks a lot KPF...

Once this goes up, all those memories will be shattered, and lost in the rabbit hole. Only in America do you have people complain about a 1,514 ft tower. You should be sending love letters to KPF, Barnett, Stern, SHoP Architects, Shvo, and Silverstein as these are the super tall gods. All of which are transforming the skyline for the 21st Century. Couple of more to list, but you get the point.

The first floor of the tower will include retail space and a bank. The second, third and 61st through 64th floors will have retail as well. The rest will be offices.

In 2013, the developer fought for an ultimately unsuccessful Bloomberg Administration plan to rezone Midtown East. A more modest rezoning proposal under Mayor Bill de Blasio unanimously passed the City Council in May of this year. That plan rezoned five blocks of Midtown East and allowed One Vanderbilt to proceed while requiring SL Green to spend roughly $210 million on infrastructure improvements to the Grand Central subway station at the base of the planned structure.

SL Green purchased the site, along with the 18-story, 142,000-square-foot office building that occupied it back in 2011 for $77 million.
