Stadiums and Arenas of Canada part 2

A few comments about arena designs:

Air Canada Centre; certainly one of the better looking arenas. The partial preservation of the Canada Post building makes it distinctive. The new-ish atrium facing Maple Square seems to have made a huge impact on the aesthetics and general ambiance of the place. All arenas should have a "Maple Leaf Square" type space.

Molson (Bell) Centre; big brick block of blandness. Good thing one side has always been blocked by Windsor Station. Credit should be given for development around the arena, encouraging a livelier district and hiding a few blank walls. The planned improvements to L'Avenue des Canadiens façade and (based on the renderings) the closing of the street to create a plaza, will go a long way to match the ACC in creating a vibrant new gathering place, similar to ML Square.

I love the design of the United Centre in Chicago. I think they did an excellent job paying homage to Art Deco. Too bad the area around it is so dismal. Seas of parking lots should never be acceptable in urban areas.

American Airlines Centre's classic design might be the best in the NHL IMO. They too seem to have a nice ML Square type area in front. But again, lots of parking lots around it.

Xcel could be the best modern design around.

Back to Canada, MTS is well designed, fits well in the urban fabric, but lacks a gathering spot outside.

Québec. It's a little bland. Inside and out. I don't hate it, it's just ok. My biggest issue is the lack of... everything around it. It's the 1990s all over again; arena in giant parking lot.

Oilers arena, although I'm not a fan of the exterior design, the interior is spectacular. So is the development around it.

Looking at these new buildings and the improvements to older buildings in downtown areas, I'm looking forward to see what the Senators will be proposing for Downtown Ottawa.

Nationwide Arena is not bad either. Seems to have a good street presence.

Looks like Edmonton has dropped the idea of the catwalks that were shown in earlier renditions. Also, the lines of the Sprint Centre (not the glass walls) are very similar to the Videotron Centre.

Videotron Centre- From what the locals of Quebec city say, It's the best place they could have put it. Although I agree with you I love the downtown arenas. Apparently it was the best option. But I cant agree with you on bland. Untill that Picture of rogers place came out earlier today I was in complete awe of the interior of VTC. I'll leave the exterior up for debate I seem to wake up with a different opinion day to day.

New rink in Ottawa- Unless this is being built with Private funds (which it's not, never is anymore) you had better get use to the CTT because you have 20 years left in it minimum. I mean It's one of canada's better arenas IMO If it was built in DT Ottawa you think this talk of a new Arena would even be considered? This apparent "shelf life" the CTT is quickly approaching would triple.

Those new tickets won't be cheap with all those new amenities.

Looks like a better more modern ACC in its bowl layout.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't like the black seats. Other arenas like the Consol Energy Centre have it, but it gives it a more gloomy/dark look. I much prefer the brighter feeling of a lighter colour like what's used in the Videotron Centre.

MLSE aren't messing around with the new scoreboard. This is the real deal...$10 Million dollar project. Leaf is made from aircraft aluminium screens are 18x32. It will do some crazy light show when the leafs score

Console Is a really bad example of black seats. It looks dull there. Barclays center (islanders new home) and Sprint center are a better representation of how sharp black seat can look. However rogers place will even look better, I dont know if you watched the video I posted but the seats have an almost silk finish they are really sharp

It may take awhile, but I'm expecting Calgary to have the most amazing entertainment district and arena/stadium in North America when all is said and done

With the economy tanking I think we may be waiting quite a while. Or maybe they'll scale their idea way back (IE: basic arena and no stadium).

The economy thing is a bit of a misnomer. Having a struggling economy is actually ideal for building a huge project like this as labour is cheaper.

I think this is more about changing governments than anything else.

It’s a Canadian designed and built maple leaf sculpture made of aircraft aluminum that can be seen through the corners of four enlarged LED screens and from underneath.

The ACC took a long look at the so-called boxcar model of scoreclock used in arenas such as Tampa Bay and in football venues such as Dallas. But Steele said that such a long design stretching over the bluelines robbed end zone viewers of the experience. The small footprint of the ACC, which borders Union Station and the Gardiner Expressway, also favoured a four sided model.

Glad they went with this model. The model in Tampa Bay really screws over those sitting behind the nets as the screen is much smaller than the sides. Also it blocks off the view to half the arena.

I can't see Calgary going with no stadium. Once Mosaic 2.0 is built Calgary will by far have the worst stadium in the CFL. That won't sit well in Canada's 4th largest city with an abundance of wealth during good economic times.

The new ACC board looks good, but what about the Raptors?

MLSE can keep in thinking they are ugly sisters of the family but the Raptors in 2 years will being in more revenue each year than the Leafs.


MLSE needs to invest real money into making hte arena truly dual tennant and not the hodge podge 50/50 split that it is now. The irony also is that it was the NBA All-Star game that mandated this new board investment as the NBA made it a stipulation of Toronto winning its bid for the game. It would be ideal if some sort of Raptors compenent was put into the board also but I guess thats hard to do when your logo now is just a basketball...

Yeah man I doubt it. It's gonna be a stripped down version of whatever dream they have. Edmonton's project came in at a cost of 650M So if calgary is looking for the same arena and a feild house and stadium with all the same bells and whistles Edmonton for It's gonna be close to a billion dollar project
