This makes sense, thanks! So I guess those empty stores are waiting for higher-end retailers to take up shop?

No you should be fine. My brother went to the Outlet on Saturday (day 3 of opening) at 6pm. The main road to YVR was not blocked or busy. Cars were bumper to bumper on the off ramp to the outlet however. I wouldn't anticipate any delays for this Thursday evening.. maybe if your flight is Saturday early afternoon then it could be a problem.

No the first few days traffic was badly organised but today it was flowing smoothly.

That's why I say we need a new exciting mall downtown to recapture some of those traffic back here. Can't anyone, including the City, see that there are huge profits to be had here?

http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2015/07/vanco...king-160000-visitors-on-opening-weekend/

An estimated 160,000 people stopped by the new Vancouver Airport Outlet Mall on opening weekend making it the most successful McArthurGlen centre opening in the world, compared to the other 20 centre that have opened throughout Europe. The traffic count includes four days, from Thursday, July 9 to Sunday July 12.

On opening day the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport saw record-breaking crowds of approximately 45,000 guests, the largest opening for any of McArthurGlen’s 20 designer outlet centres.

Momentum did not wane as the weekend came and despite the cooler and wetter weather over the weekend, shoppers came out in droves to see the new outlet mall.

To accommodate the increased traffic expected at the centre over opening month, the frequency of train services has been increased. Guests are encouraged to take the Canada Line as the centre is easily accessible via public transport, with Canada Line’s Templeton Station located across the street. Shoppers travelling from downtown Vancouver will be at the centre in just over 20 minutes, while those coming from the airport will arrive in three minutes. Travel between the airport and Templeton Station on the Canada Line is free.

The mall will become even more busy as the falling Canadian dollar makes more people shop at home

stopped by yesterday, No proper restaurants open yet, just a couple of stands in 1 building and 2 food trucks. Nothing high end open yet, same mid grade stores but in an outlet. There will be another bunch of stores to open in the fall including Brooks Brothers puma and a few more. I see this mall being a ghost town come jan 15 to april as there is nothing to draw people in.

Coach still had a long line outside the store and artigio was busy selling coffee. Overall mall was not that busy compared to other outlet malls i have been to on a regular day

Also, the colder rainy season is not going to help as shoppers love indoor malls way better.

They've been closed since late June if not earlier: https://twitter.com/RonWilsonVan/statuses/614289576966815744

Armani is pretty mid-range, eh?

I love how there's always someone on this forum who can try to put a negative spin on things which are an obvious success.

The place is packed with tourists, who will still be going there Jan. to April.

If it is packed with Tourists during the spring and summer. Then has another surge of shopping leading up to Christmas and a small spike in January for boxing day/week/month it should all work out. Retail tends to be seasonal anyway.

Has anyone heard any recent rumours of what's going into the Metrotown Target? Presumably not Walmart as they've already announced a bunch of locations they picked up. I've haven't seen / heard any action on it when I've been at Metrotown.

On a somewhat related note, how much longer do you think until the Central Blvd end of Station Square reopens? I was told summer, which I guess means it should open before Labour Day.

No Negative spin at all. When this mall was proposed the brands that would be in it were Prada, Chanel and LV etc. Armarni Exchange is mid grade, They discount the same as everyone else and are in metro, new west outlet, and oakridge and robson. So is Gap, Guess and many others. If it was a Georgio Armani selling tailored suits that would be a different level.

Coach is almost a Target brand now as they have I believe more outlet locations than premium locals. MK is following the same trend openning stores in every mall

That is the same market trends as Robson. If they could board up the windows and roll up the carpet on robson they would. Most days from MId Jan to April the stores don't sell enough to cover the rent for the day. RObson has a 6 month window that rocks and 6 months were its crying.

Many retail high streets (at least in North America) have the same issue. Retailers need to locate here as prestige/flagship placeholders -- the bread and butter come from their other distribution points.

Outdoor fashion retail seems more seasonal than the indoor ones. Metrotown, Richmond Centre and PC seem pretty busy year round (Best sales in the country, FYI). On a rainy day, Robson street is pretty dead, and I'm guessing the McArthurGlen mall will be as well.

And aren't indoor malls slower in nice sunny days?
