well placed Mall obviously
Hehe, serves YVR right for foolishly believing planner-blather that customers for a luxury goods mall would come by transit. It was already a bad stretch of road with traffic from Vancouver trying to cut across the two lanes coming from Russ Baker to get to the AC hangar, UPS and Canada Post. Now it will be that much worse.

I think it's just novelty right now and will run out of it's larger appeal quickly.

^^Every news story I've seen has mentioned that Templeton Station has been extremely busy with people "streaming" out of the trains heading to the mall. Nice to hear the station is seeing so much use. I bet it's seen weeks worth of passengers in a single day.

But I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised to hear how successful opening day has been. If I had to choose between only one outlet mall surviving - Tsawwassen Mills or this - I would hope this one would last.

there would have been more traffic at templeton today than the combine traffic since opening. It was over flow and car rental lot before so very few people. So do we have a list of brands in phase 1

If you actually zoom in into the outlet mall on google maps, you'll see store such as Ted Baker and versace and other luxury stores not yet announced by the mall itself. You can also see how the other phases will be designed and leased. https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.1975144,-123.1393923,19z

On another note, it seems the outlet mall is actually not that expensive. I was expected higher prices(though i did not buy anything). Most of the people there seemed to leave with at least one shopping bag in hand.

Think of all the income and sales taxes that mall is generating!

It seems to me like only the mid-range mall brands are there at the moment, and that's why the prices are still relatively inexpensive (Like the stores at Morgan Crossing and Queensborough Landing). There are no brands like Louis Vuitton, Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace, Giogio Armani, Chanel, Dior, Kenzo, Valentino, Sergio Rossi, M Missoni, Valentino, Leo, Alexander McQueen, and many others. When these brands do arrive, then you see a real spike in prices. Maybe Vancouver is not ready yet.

Vancouver is not ready for what? Outlet brands that sell leftover merchandises or lower quality items made specifically for outlets and not retail?

A co-worker who went says the deals there are maybe a little more than the equivalent (including exchange) at Seattle Premium Outlets, but the much closer distance makes it worthwhile.

We'll see what happens as time goes on, and if they adjust prices in line with the exchange rate if/when that happens.

A waiter at the Olive Garden near Seattle Premium said the Outlets there are the most expensive place for clothes in town and just for Canadian tourists. He thought I was American at the time.

I think that the YVR outlet mall will do well.

- It will take a bite out of the retail leakage to the US, keeping more dollars here, which is good.
- It will directly employ hundreds of people, perhaps more than a thousand in time, which is good.
- It will help defray YVR operating and capital costs and help make it that much more of a cost-competitive airport, which is good.
- It has started mid-market, which makes it broadly accessible to the shopping public, and the later phase of the project will likely be higher end/true luxury, creating an aspirational path within the outlet mall, which is good.
- It's on a SkyTrain line, creating a viable alternative to driving for staff and customers, which is good.

I also heard anecdotally that the Nike Store at the outlet mall had one of the highest/potentially the highest grossing opening day of any Nike Store in North America, which is good.

But will it really take a big bite out of retail leakage to the US? Regardless of the price difference, many people go to the States just because there is a wisespread perception that it is cheaper, whether it is or not. I think it'll be successful, but I don't see Seattle Premium Outlets suffering any time soon.

You have to remember how far away Seattle Premium Outlets is. It's about 2h30m each way. Not worth a day trip under any circumstances IMO.

I can get there from my house in New West in about 1.45.

The other day I was able to get from New West to Bellingham in 38 mins. New record.

New West is the halfway point to the US for a lot of Vancouverites. Once you're through the city it's smooth sailing.

Vancouver record store and nightclub combo first of its kind

Studio Records on Granville Street is set to become Vancouver’s first record store and nightclub in one. The idea is to be a music hub where you can listen to live performances, have a couple drinks, and grab some vinyl while you’re at it.

The atmosphere is casual and laid back, a place to hang out and be comfortable, but perhaps the best aspect of the Studio Records is the attention they pay to local artists.

"We want to be open during the day and be kind of a music hub for artists to come in and hang out and listen to records and vinyl and have a beer, and then at night you could through the back of the shop and get into the live music venue.”

Studio Records will also allow people who want to break into the music scene an opportunity to do so with an open mic night every Wednesday.

They beat FiveSixty - it used to be A&B on Seymour and now it's a nightclub.

I know my family has dragged me to it for a day trip many a time, and I know many other people just go there and back. I know I live closer to the border than many others, but still.
