July 11, 1970: Edmonton House ‘the spot’ for city’s young swingers

Quote:
When developers Jean de La Bruyère and Sandy McTaggart of MacLab Enterprises conceived the idea for Edmonton House in 1967, they were — that “a new concept in living was coming into vogue and that Edmonton could supply enough of the jet-set crowd of swingers to fill a high-priced but luxurious apartment building,” the Journal reported.
“The apartment way of life, rather than fighting traffic daily in drives from the suburbs, seems to be in for people with good salaries,” the story said.
“Major office buildings recently completed, under construction, or proposed such as the Baker Centre, Cambridge Building, AGT Tower, Oxford Tower and the proposed Principal Group project are providing numerous good salaried jobs in the immediate downtown area which could be filled by people living in Edmonton House.”
When the 45-storey building west of the Chateau Lacombe Hotel on Bellamy Hill opens in 1971, de La Bruyere said, it will allow residents to pursue the way of life enjoyed by vacationers on a luxury ocean liner.
It was considered the only building of its kind in Canada, and the largest apartment building in Edmonton at the time.
The $7-million, 304-apartment highrise complex, which would house about 700 people, would include restaurants, a tavern, games room, swimming pool and other facilities to make residents self-sufficient.
Proposed rents would be substantial, but “spacious apartments with wide balconies, tastefully decorated halls and lobbies, private pools, games rooms, dance floors and bar will be the reward,” the story said.
De La Bruyere said the building would be out of reach of anyone earning under $500 a month but many people making $500-$600 could afford a one-bedroom apartment for $170 a month, alone or with a roommate. A two-bedroom apartment would cost around $300 a month.
