Irving Oil Center will not fly as Mr. Robert Irving is of the JDI clan and the family is not as cozy with each other as they once were...family feud at its best
My two cents worth for the naming of the building would be:
Armour Center
Midland Center
Sunbury Center
UPS Center
Major Drilling Center
After all Moncton is the transportation hub of the Maritimes and the call center mecca in the province. Two out of the five above are JDI companies. The last one is a bit of a stretch, but you never know.

It all starts with an idea...think about it!
I could see them put up a sign that say's The Moncton Convention center, The Joseph Edward Leger Convention Center, or maybe The Codiac Convention center.
I had also thought it could be named The Vancouver Convention Center but not sure how well that would go...
On CBC Radio this morning - there will be a Moncton city council meeting today to discuss whether or not the city should go ahead and borrow $95M for the events centre.

Complete with all the naysayers and doom and gloomers that don't realize that we need signature projects like this to help start making money in the province again.

And here we go........
So does this mean that if approved by council that the project will go ahead? I thought there was still some federal funding pending, or have we already met the required threshold?

The city must have recieved sufficient assurances that the remainder of the "in-kind" funding is in the pipeline. They are working on a tight timeline now. I presume they need to apply to borrow the money now in order to keep the process in motion.
I would assume they are applying for borrowing the entire amount to prove to the backers that they will be able to complete the budgeted project no matter what.
Plus the federal commitment is supposed to be covered by moving numbers around, so on paper the city's commitment would be ~50 million; the Federal component comes from 25 million of other projects the city doesn't need to cover.
I suspect a lot of this is probably just rubber stamping; but the media likes to trumpet it as another Big Thing!. Given the CBC's general anti-tone towards the project, they'll play it up as "The city's borrowing 100 million dollars of your money for this project!" ignoring that most of it won't actually be borrowed due to the guarantees already in place from the province.
CBC comment section is just... caustic vitriol. Utter poison with one sensible person in 50. Sometimes I can't help but comment/correct people, but generally it's pointless to argue with people who:
1) Have poor reading comprehension (don't understand what the article is saying, but comment/flame anyway), regardless of the topic
2) Want to blame Harper/Trudeau/McKenna/Diefenbaker/whoever, regardless of the topic
3) Grind an axe about the cost of bilingualism, regardless of the topic
4) Want to complain about the cost of the civil service, regardless of the topic
It's just... gross. These forums are a haven of civility and intelligence, in comparison.

A lot of it comes down to moderation (or a complete lack thereof) in both senses of the word. People love to bicker about freedom of speech, but if you don't have a clear set of rules like keeping the conversation on topic things will invariably turn into flame wars and people who just parrot their favourite talking points no matter what. It also helps that the general tone on these boards is more level headed and laid back.

One step closer. If the Municipal Borrowing Board approves (and it will), then I imagine the next step will be revealing the winning proposal and debating that.
This will be the really exciting part - we get to see renders!!!

Any idea how long it takes to get approved and is there any chance they won't approve?
In this case, approval is a mere formality. I don't know how long it would take for approval (ie - when their next meeting is), but I would imagine the reason why the city council met today is to make sure they get on to the agenda of the next borrowing board meeting. I would imagine that approval will be given in the next couple of weeks.

I thought approval was already given... If not then why not just get a private company instead of the city to build, and run it. The process seems faster that way then all these meeting they keep having about it...
