IF you send anything like this to the polls it will fail because the NO side has strong arguments whether factual or not that makes it hard to overcome by the yes side.

Remember the Vander Zalm arguments against the HST? Its the same thing happening with the Translink arguments focussing on things like executive pay or overall salaries which amount for less than 10% of total operating budget (i think less than five) but it's easy appealing to the lowest common denominator of "these guys make more money than you".

I fully expect the NO side to win, just not sure about the margin of victory.

Yes, the PST should be scrapped if replaced with a VAT like HST.

Remember the Liberals tried to do that without a vote, but we had slick Willy rally the geriatric crowd and now we're left with the PST. I'd say it's at least another 10 years until we can try the HST plan again.

But, at the end of the day it makes sense to tie transit funding to something related to GDP, since the demands should move in a similar fashion. That usually means income tax or sales tax.

Interestingly enough. Vancouver still voted "No", though it was very very close. Bowen Island, Belcarra and "Election A" are the "Yes" voters.

I find it interesting that they posted a breakdown by municipality. Will that be used at all?

Vancouver was very close, Surrey was a blowout for the No side.

How do you think that will be used to determine any future investments? Broadway vs. Surrey LRT? Patullo replacement?

One thing is for certain... the bickering will continue on as before, nothing so see here.

This should have never been taken up to a vote. Absolutely ridiculous.

I am surprised that it was 'no' by such a large margin.

Well, this throws a definite wrench into the works for our region for the next few years. The 'no' supporters are going to be pretty pleased, to say the least, but I hope that the folks who said loud and clear that they were in favour of investing in transit - just not via this tax and/or without governance reform for Translink - will still support investment in our system through other funding methods.

Bowen Island Municipality
City of North Vancouver
District of North Vancouver
District of West Vancouver
Metro Vancouver Electoral Area "A"
Village of Belcarra
City of New Westminster
City of Port Moody

People who don't take transit voted for transit.

This leads me to believe that skytrain shutdowns pissed off too many riders, who then voted no. Which I understand.

Still, Burnaby, Richmond, and Surrey really piss me off with the blowout numbers. I guess the homeowners/car-drivers who voted no want to pay for it another way...

Seems that people of Surrey don't want to fund transit despite benefitting from it so greatly. I would think Broadway absolutely takes the priority over Surrey LRT with this result.

Indeed. What the no result has indicated is that Vancouver/Burnaby/New West/Richmond will remain the transit havens, while everywhere else will be the opposite. Thank God the Evergreen line didn't depend on this.

No... they want Translink shut down, meanwhile they bitch about traffic, bridge, tolls, etc. They can't put 2 and 2 together. 2 + 2 = 3 in their world.
