I think this is for the towers between MetroPlace and Silver.

People living in set of apartments near Metrotown are worried they’ll have no place to live.

Others like her say there’s not enough affordable rental housing, and that adding these two towers, one 41 and the other 26 storeys, would only make things worse.
With very few affordable rental housing units available in the city, many are joining the fight to keep these homes.

It's only now that the towers are going up that people are complaining. It's not like the plan to build them along Beresford was hidden and suddenly sprung on them with no warning, like in Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy...

Btw I knew someone who lived in one of those low rise buildings who described it as slumlord land.

The Midori now has a page on Polgygon Homes

This is the one at 6579 Marlborough Ave. I'm don't think there is a thread yet.

Also the presentation center doesn't have any siding up yet, so it's not yet open.

Thanks for pointing this one out, I hadn't heard of it! Unfortunately it looks like it's replacing more rental housing, is that correct? I'm starting to sympathize with the folks defending rental housing against teardowns in the Maywood neighbourhood (link). But I still love the addition to the skyline and the added density when towers are built. I can't decide whether I want these towers to go up, all I hope is that they start building more market rental units as well as condos for purchase.

I pay 650$/mo for a Bachelor suite immediately across from this. All the Towers that have gone up in Metrotown are renting for 1500$ (on craigslist) for the same square footage. That is why people are up in arms.

My preference would be for everything down Marlborough Ave be replaced with rental-only towers with units that rent for less than 1000$/mo but that won't happen when these buildings are all being designed as luxury condos.

Hmm so if those buildings weren't being redeveloped wouldn't that just push up the value of everything else with all the people moving to the area?

Where abouts? I'm curious to know when the Value Village is going to close for good.

It's on the kingsway frontage of the parking lot, they even blocked access to the parking lot from Kingsway.

Employees said that their hoping to close out with the holiday season.

I go to that store sometimes and talk to one of the workers. They didn't used to have a lease (apparently it's one of the few locations that Value Village doesn't own) but since being bought and it taking forever, they've been given yearly leases which have been extended a few times. They'll definitely be there until Nov (not sure if that's the beginning or end of the month).

Seeing as the first phase will be along Kingsway (so a tower and the office cube on the corner) and then up Edmonds (two more towers) it's a pretty safe bet Value Village will be there for another year. If the city info is up to date, then it's still sitting on second reading.

Insightful !

Value Village got a huge payday from selling the site a few years back.

Did they also own the tiny corner lot where the former pawn shop was? or was it purchased separately

As far as I know Value Village never owned the site - they just rented it. Whoever owned it got a good payday out of Cressey (who still have almost zero info about it online).

I drove through Edmonds today and I started wondering why we haven't seen any recent proposals for Edmonds? There are towers going up all over the place (even in places like Delta!) but there is nothing going on in Edmonds. I highly doubt that Edmonds is built out and there are lots of prime sites.

Is Burnaby holding back developing Edmonds further for now and driving development to Metrotown, Brentwood and soon Lougheed? I just find it a shame considering that Edmonds actually had pretty decent services.

There are a couple proposals - there just haven't been any shovels in the ground yet. There's Kings Crossing (Value Village site) and Southgate (Safeway distribution site). The rest of it for the moment is lowrise infill.

Edmonds is unappealing because the distance between the Highgate Village and the Edmonds skytrain station by walking is too far. Edmonds does not have any plans on becoming a transit-oriented development like the other three Burnaby quadrants.
