Christchurch Cathedral is pretty well covered now. I sure hope we don't have any big windstorms before the work on the roof is finished. More info and link in jsbertram's post here.

Last Friday evening I was at Emery Barnes Park and saw a notice there saying that the vacant parking lot at Richards and Smithe will be turned into another public park. Anyone to confirm this?

Yes this is true. The parking lot and the building that used to house Lucy Mae Brown is city owned. Part of Telus Gardens CAC's are being used to fit out the park.
Personally I think it will be an awkward site for a park because it slopes down to the ally and won't get much sun.

Agreed. Poor choice for a park

Thanks guys, thought it was a prank of some sort when I first saw the sign. I was hoping for a new retail district around there but wouldn't really mind having a new park to soften that area up a little more. The back alley could be repaved with pavers and used as a farmer's market like that at Nelson Park or Yaletown certain days of the week. Food trucks can go in there too.

as long as its more friendly that park over in yaletown, it looks nice but the hard surface make it uninviting

Funny, one of the reasons I decided against a purchase in TELUS Garden was the proximity to parks, or lack thereof.

I'm not sure this would change my mind though.

That park has been planned for years, but the City was running low on funds from Development Cost Levies which were poured into Emery Barnes Park.

Telus Garden, I think, included an amenity contribution to the construction of this park, so that's why it's finally moving forward.

Hopefully the design will level out the grade, raising it on the alley side, so as to hide the loading bays and driveway of the 889 Homer condo/mixed use block.
It's already bad enough that that building was designed to have another back-to-back with it.

I don't get why the City is getting low on funds considering the fact that there are now more busineses opening and residents living in compact neighbourhoods, and with property taxes tied to increasing property values, residents and businesses should be contributing a lot more to taxes than before. They also make developers pay for the costs of everything, so I'm not sure why they are always running low in their coffers. I'm really curious to know why. I wish the City can send out more crew around the clock to keep the City clean, considering that there are so many local and international events happening in town.

A sloping grassy park with lots of trees can look pretty good too. It can have cascading water features going towards the alleyside. Stepped tiled or concrete terraces can allow people to sit around to have lunches, etc. Buskers can even perform at designated squares, but I guess that isn't possible with so many residents living nearby.

Property taxes don't work that way. Google "mill rate".

Pics from today. Looks like they might be installing some sort of crane now. I don't think the base was very deep at all. Maybe just one or two levels.

thought this was interesting. carmana plaza (1128 alberni - rental building across the street from the Shangri-la) is converting 12 floors from residential use to hotel use.

here's the approve development permit report:

i wonder what hotel is moving in?

It's apparently the status quo -
It's a correction of a 10+ year non-conforming use / bylaw violation!!

Town line homes sent me an email saying 999 Seymour has sold out. But then went on to say they have various future projects one of which is downtown. Anyone know where that might be?

Walking past Camana for the past 10 years I always thought it was a hotel, valet and concierge service.
