Be easy on him. I believe he's American.

In all seriousness though, he seems afflicted with a variant of the troll gene. While a complex clinical scenario, it is not too bad if you take him as entertainment.

Regarding the golf club hostel, I think one of the best things to do is create Jane's Walk type walking circuits. I recall doing these in Boston (though, agreed that is a completely different type of city). The ones for here would include public art in one, architectural highlights in a second, and in-door shopping (IE +15 network) in a third. In certain parts of the year, the festival line-up in Calgary is quite busy, and should be highlighted, and last but not least, one can really be amazed at the number of events happening each and every week in our performance spaces and other cultural institutions. It takes a pinch of work, but if one runs a business, may make sense to create a run-down of things once per month. A major gap in and around the core is lack of good movie theatres, which sometimes is another option for some types of guests (I've gone on trips where I end up taking in a movie in-between time) and not sure where one would do that in these parts.

Anyway - back to East Village people.

When I travel to other cities I do visit the distinct tourist destinations but it is the regular amenities that keep me occupied. For instance, visited St. James Gate, St. Stephen’s Green and Temple Bar when I was in Dublin but it was the laidback burger resto, Little Dublin Museum and cafes/shops in an area beside Grafton that keep me busy. While Calgary may not have as many of these amenities and as part of a continuous urban fabric like London and New York or even Amsterdam and Melbourne, it does exist and is worth the effort it takes to explore.
Quoted for truth.

In my experience, the "unique distinct tourist destinations" are more truthfully called overcrowded tourist traps crawling with locals looking to exploit and gouge said tourists out of all the money they possible can. Overcrowded, uncomfortable, and not all that interesting or entertaining.

When I travel, I have long abandoned the pretension of needing to visit every location's "unique and special snowflakes" of landmarks. The real thrill of travelling for me is really exploring a new place, meeting some local people there, and following the philosophy of "when in Rome..." by blending in and experiencing the unique cultures of the world. That is entirely something that you can do in Calgary, because we do have our own vibe our own culture and our own distinct twist on day to day life. Sure, no one is going to fly halfway across the world for Analog Coffee or the Ship and Anchor, but it isn't about the places themselves, it's about experiencing those places in Calgary surrounded by Calgarians in the unique and distinct Calgary culture. Now THAT is something I think is worth flying half way around the world for, and if people really embrace that philosophy of travel, I think they would largely agree.

Truth be told, it isn't worth flying half way around the world to see the Eiffel Tower or the Coliseum or the Pyramids of Egypt either. Experiencing Parisian, Italian and Egyptian culture however, makes it worthwhile.

Agreed. In Barcelona, for example, Las Ramblas is a terribly overpriced street with crap souvenir shops, crap restaurants and just general crap. La Boqueria market is cool, but the rest of it is just overpriced low quality garbage. But the rest of the city outside the main tourist drag is pretty awesome.

Operative word was "good". The two suggested provided amongst the worst experience for modern movies. They'd be okay for Charlie Chaplin I suppose.

Eau Claire is a possibility for the time being, though a mediocre theatre. Chinook is solid, however I don't consider 70 ave S as core.

There is a pinch of speaking out of both sides of mouths on this forum.

Really? I've found far more enjoyment from going to movies at the Plaza and Globe than any other theatre. But maybe its because I'm cultured enough to like more than just big explosions in 3D!!!!

Go ahead and have that debate with the hostel dwellers.

For me, I'm cultured enough to have already suggested the live performing arts, but was trying to be thoughtful about perspectives of a variety of people. If you go back and read my post with suggestions for mr. hostel, you'll see it was a constructive post.

I'm unclear of why some of you folks are always after me. I'm not sure if it is some adolescent attraction you folks have. I'm not available.

And to think some people want suburbia to be banned! If he was banned we wouldn't have these kinds of epic responses to him. The humour surrounding the responses to him more than make up for his general lazy trolling comments.

Went to the East Village block party last night, pretty cool event, great to see all the improvements in the area and all the people enjoying Riverwalk and commenting on how nice the area looks. Was weird though, considering it was the East Village (still some sketchy people around) I didn't see a single cop and there were probably 5000 people there and lots were getting good and drunk by the end of it.

A uniformed officer wouldn't stand a chance in a East Village crowd. You likely had dozens of plain clothed agents carrying P90s.

With hipsters embracing ironic facial hair, the undercover cops wouldn't stand out.

What? There should be a visual police presence at any major event, especially if alcohol is involved, mostly just to act as a visual deterrent. There was a ton of security guards and I saw them arrest a few people (or detain them until real police arrived).

The city of Calgary will be getting a new music pavilion-gazebo structure near the banks of the Bow River between the East Village and Fort Calgary.

Also seeing a lot of activity near the Fort Calgary site. I guess they're building a community garden?
