I wish we could see a Cypress St elevation. I'm really curious as to how this development will address the street there. As far as I'm aware, there are renderings circulating out there from this perspective.

According to this article:

http://bettercities.net/article/walkable-urban-places-growing-michigan-21669

Atlanta has gone from in the 90's only 10% walkable development to 50% beating out Boston and Washington DC

They've already focused on getting the lines off Peachtree (mostly under the justification for the Christmas Parade to come through Midtown now). There are bigger issues at hand than just griping about power lines.
I agree with the 15th and 13th street extensions, but I don't see why people are so gung ho about converting Spring and West Peachtree to 2-way? They need sidewalk improvements sure, but it's really not as bad a pedestrian experience as people make it out to be in my opinion.

One-way streets THAT wide do nothing to facilitate good development. The current state of Spring Street north of 10th is nothing more than a parking deck alley because of being a mere highway for 3+ lanes of travel.

It's not conducive for any active use - let alone retail- to survive that long - yet the Midtown DRC tries to dictate "active use" on them. Justy imagine trying to get to some retail location but you pass it...but it's too confusing to try to loop back on all these one-way streets that don't connect mid-block like they should. But Spring/West Peachtree are too wide to make these smaller mid-block connections work for traffic unless they're converted back to 2-lane roads.

Then "they" wonder why they fail to lease properly and conceded to having "Skyhouse-level" quality of retail that fails over time.

The last incarnation of Skyhouse's parking deck along Spring are nothing more than glorified signage boxes for Skyhouse Midtown.

it's essentially a freeway, designed to keep traffic flowing through midtown as quickly as possible. if you slow down and try to stop, commuters honk at you, people cut around you, etc. it's horrible for local businesses. midtown is enough of an attraction in itself that redirecting that traffic elsewhere would only be an improvement.

Ft Mac ULI Panel Study conducted

With today's announcement of the sale of 330 acres of land at Fort McPherson to Atlanta entertainment executive, Tyler Perry , there is another action by the civilian based The McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority (MILRA) that is noteworthy because of its impact on Atlanta's future growth and urban development. A panel of volunteer experts convened by the Urban Land Institute ( ULI) gave their ideas about what might become of 144 acres of Army land that won’t be part of the deal.An expanded Veterans Administration medical center, offices for federal agencies, government contractors and media companies as well as retail, restaurants and apartments were among the ideas outlined by the panel of development experts.
Among the former post’s strengths, said Monte Wilson, a planner with Jacobs Engineering and chairman of the ULI team, is that the VA wants to expand their medical facilities. Other federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration and federal contractors and media companies could be viable options for the existing office buildings the authority will retain.
The group recommended a launching point involving the rehab of the fort’s historic village in the northeast quadrant of the post and turning it into neighborhood retail and restaurants. Tyler Perry Studios will generate demand for retail and restaurants, and wooing other anchor tenants could help the community become more attractive, said Rod Mullice, a commercial broker with Colliers International and a ULI panel member.
Other issues include what entity — MILRA or private sector groups — will serve as master developer. MILRA board members said the authority will need more staff and director talent. There is also the question of sources of investment capital and infrastructure and streetscape issues.
“You have a lot here in front of you to do,” Wilson said.

AMLI City Place

The base of the tower crane was put in this week at AMLI City Place and the park between the sites is almost complete. I will try to get a picture of the site next week.

Hm, just ran across this. Apparently this would be where the Garden Hills cinema was, next to Fellini's.

The office building looks okay but I'm not sure I'm getting all that other stuff.

Not entirely amazed by the high rise itself, but I do quite like the podium and how it interacts with the street.

That looks like a reflective glass to me. It won't effect drivers as the sun will always be behind the building.

The architecture sure is trying to mimic Buckhead Atlanta.

Wow, honestly, that looks great. The architecture actually looks like some thought went into it. I wish more of our midrise apartments had that type of roofing.

Not me. Dive bars are cool. But it's great to have luxury places to go when you want to celebrate a promotion, new acquisition, etc.

you mean those "mandatory fun" work get-togethers? rich people just don't know how to party.

Lol. I'll just say people appreciate different things. One thing we don't want is for Atlanta to be a one dimensional crowd...but no, I wasn't talking about work together functions. My friends and associates love the nice restaurants to hang out...be it STK, Capital Grill, etc.

i agree that we don't want atlanta to be one-dimensional; however, i'm afraid buckhead is becoming exactly that.

but yes, we all do appreciate different things. it's good to have a mix. i'm just going to miss the old strip mall with dive bars and fantasyland records.
