Either way, this plaza is in trouble. Dollaramma, Thrift Store and Global Gym and a bunch of vacant space is not a great model.
Does that mean GT is moving elsewhere?

This plaza has never been anything more than a low end type of shopping destination. Even going back during the K-Mart glory days. In the past 40 years, I've always viewed this location as being...well...low end!

I nickname it "Discount Plaza"
It's a bad location, if someone had the money it would likely be worth it to tear it down and build something facing mountain road. Especially if the co-op closes and one of the remaining tenants moves to the Canadian Tire building. I know Dollarama is a major tenant of Plaza REIT (they hold something like 12% of all of their leasable space) and if Plaza buys that building, they would be the first I'd offer it to. The second would be Giant Tiger.

Getting back to downtown developments, anybody hear any about the hotel at Main and Vaughan Harvey?

The new Blue Olive location on Main Street is apparently scheduled to open in August.

I noticed they are removing the siding off the old Tuttle Brothers Funeral Home on Lutz, revealing the original brick wall. Any idea what's going on there?

They should tear it down and expand Lutz to 4 lanes.

Yes, that'd be awesome. At least add a turning lane on each side of the intersection. Is there anything left in the buildings that used to include Graffiti and Intact Insurance?

Bad news on St George: there's now a 'for sale' sign on the cleared lot at Steadman where a 2-storey building was planned (there was a render for it a while back).

Too bad.

I think we could create an entirely new Moncton thread and call it [Moncton] Proposed Downtown Projects Never to See the Light of Day.

Might have to make one for every part of Greater Moncton there are lots of projects that seem to be being dropped for no reason or at least no reason actually given...

We overbuilt the residential multiples sector (apartments etc) too much in the last 3 years, supply outstripped demand by a fair margin...I for one am happy to see a cool down year for this segment....

As demand catches up (and it will) we will see more projects come to life...for now we will need to be satisfied with the commercial/retail/institutional stuff going on around town...and wait patiently for the event center announcements

Not sure I try to keep up to date on every piece of land owned by the government, and it looks like it might be sold off as Surplus despite the complaints from nearby residents complaining about all the staffs parking there cars on almost every spot on side streets...

The 55 Queen street development that is supposed to be an Apartment/Condo tower with main floor commercial space it said to be almost 50% sold. It will replace the old Brinks Building. Is it just me who see this as something that would look out of place considering it's location.

They have been saying almost 50% sold for a few years now. The longer they delay the project I would assume it may end up less and less sold.

As for location - I would say no the location is fine. The area is in some need of attention, and places like this won't turn around until higher end developments such as 55 Queen get constructed. It is right downtown and this is the sort of development we need in the downtown core.

I'm also disappointed at the "almost 50% sold" thing too. In fact, I swear it used to be "over 50% sold". I imagine that the drama around the events centre may have stalled sales and caused some people to back out.

On the positive side, the developers are again heavily advertising the property and I presume this indicates a commitment to see this thing built.

As for location, this doesn't bother me. Someone has to be the trendsetter and this could be the first of several condo developments in the downtown east side.

Stylistically, the building is exotic, but I like it, and architectural diversity (hopefully) might become a trademark of downtown Moncton. The main thing that bothers me about FiveFive is that most of the condos are really small. This might be OK for people starting out, but I think empty nesters looking to downsize and move downtown might want a bit more........

I've recently seen some online advertising for 55 Queen stating they're at 50% sold and they have recently tweaked their website so I guess it's not completely dead. Might be a last ditch effort to get started. As for the location, that lot is a great location for this kind of development. That part of downtown really needs a shot in the arm. But I think an even better lot for a condo development is the parking lot immediatly west of Bore front park on Main street. Right on the waterfront on a great part of Main street, next to the riverfront trail and across from the only real urban park in the downtown core.

Mayor Leblanc was on CBC this morning talking about the Events Centre and said that there are at least 4-5 significant developments waiting on further news. You never know what kind of impact large investments likes this can have on other developpers, maybe even for 55 Queen. Anything can help.

Small? All the two bedroom units are over 1000 sq ft. That's pretty reasonable as far as condos go, especially in a downtown.
