The residence, circled on the left of the map below, originally had a view over the Los Angeles Country Club, until the club moved in 1911. The article above mentions the "broad terrace extending along the entire eastern front and terminating in a covered porch on the north, commanding a fine view of the valley and mountains in the background." The image below is from the 1910 Baist map. The 1914 map shows virtually no trace of the old club grounds (other than the name Country Club Drive), with the area already divided into plots and roads extended through it.

These posts

brought to mind the following 1940-images depicting 3301 Country Club Drive and surrounds. Building records indicates 1921 construction for 3301. Property was owned by Fred W Darley, who according to the '56CD may have had a detective/gumshoe agency. The source material references tree damage by the construction equipment and road work. The excavation suggests this road work was probably far more involved than mere tree removal and sidewalk improvements. Could be the not-so-secret installation of faux zanjas?

The photos speak for themselves.

Country Club is curved. Wilton is straight.

Nothing deters the Arden Milk Man from collecting those empties. Notice a few garbage cans, indicating some sort of pickup. A private service?

Moving dirt is a spectator sport on CC Drive. Looks like fun.

Interesting contrast between the street cleared of curb-side trees and the tree-lined street in the background. No idea whether those background trees were in danger of having a limited future. Is the rectangular object in the middle of the street, an outhouse?

Not sure about this construction, be it a thoroughfare or property development.

(I'm fascinated by images of various parts of LA beginning to form on open land, like the one above. Although I'm very aware of the underlying terrain, day-to-day life in LA with our derelict, 'recovering', urban-renewed and more stable areas, plus our tens of thousands of now-vacant lots, it's easy to forget sometimes how new LA's built environment is.)

He could not explain how these trolley related items got there but said considering some of those arteries led to nearby trolley car lines it might not be that surprising. The more I ponder this I wonder whether parallel cracks could also be from prior construction repairs, especially for utilities. It seems unlikely but did trolley car track and spikes bear readily identifiable makers marks? Unless severely worn, some of it could be recycled on other jobs, no?

I noticed this blurb concerning Disney World and faux historical track.

Photograph taken on his trip to "sell" the Versailles Treaty to the country. Not too long after this photo was taken, he suffered the first of the strokes that disabled him for the remainder of his term.

The participants look like they're enjoying themselves, but there's no other indication of a party or event in progress in this very plain room (no one is holding a glass etc).

The windows are flung wide, but the openings are barred.

Was this taken in jail or at a 3rd & Main venue? (I can't imagine it was a jail-themed party)

Also, I thought, even in the darkest years, that everyone was safe on Halloween(?)

Here's a house on Bartlett Street, just northeast of the "Stack"--

William Petzold, a janitor in an office building, was at 824 Bartlett St in the '09CD; then, in subsequent CDs through 1921, at 825 Bartlett (perhaps the '09 CD is in error, or the renumberings of many streets around 1910 had something to do with the change). The Petzolds appear to have moved to Beaudry Street by 1922.

why wasn't the parking lot extended another 200 feet to connect the two?

That appears to be the LAFD center. It used to be a Navy and Marine facility. It's come up before as the place where the sailors emerged to riot in 1943 (before learning that here from Martin Pal, I'd always thought they'd come off of ships). Stadium Way runs in a deep, but wide, "trench" between two ridgelines. The foreshortening is deceptive. It's not the kind of terrain/distance that could be bridged by a parking lot.

LARy's 5 Line ran on La Brea Ave. in Inglewood and Hawthorne, but neither they nor PE had rails on La Brea in Los Angeles. The PE crossing of Wilshire Blvd. that would've been closest to La Brea was at San Vicente Blvd.

Spikes and tie plates usually don't have markers, but rails often identify the steel mill that rolled them as well as the year that they were produced and their weight (in pounds per yard).

If I'm identifying the same "center object", it's the controller that regulated the flow of electrical power to the car's motors for propulsion. To the right, the device with the piping and a handle on top is the air brake valve. Fares would've been collected by the conductor on the car's rear platform, most likely.

Did you know that Walt Disney was into nude male sunbathing ? Yikes...more LA noir!

The new Disney Studio had an all male health club on the roof of the studio in the 1940s. See photo...

The problem was a highrise Catholic hospital nearby, so this oasis of naked males had to close by 1941.
