I heard nothing but good things about Proof. I've also heard that they're in the top 5 in Canada when it comes to spirits. Not surprising considering it's the guys behind Vine Arts.

I don't recall this being mentioned, but Dirt Belly has finally opened.

Checked out the opening night of Simmons on Friday - they did an outstanding job with that place. Execution of the interior is perfect, three awesome tenants...huge step for EV.

I was in there a few years ago as part of a focus group for the East Village residential development strategy and it already looked amazing then.

A new Indonesian place has opened in Chinatown- same folks as the Indonesian place on 17th Ave SE. It's called Bali Cafe, is in the big building where O'Cup and a lot of other places are- I wanna say 2nd Ave SE. Right next door a second (I think second) location of WOW Chicken is opening soon,

Was at Charbar on Saturday for dinner. Unfortunately they did not get their liquor license in time for the weekend, so no alcohol was served. Instead, they prepared a "mocktail" menu, at about $8 per drink. At the very least they could have offered them for free to make up for the lack of booze!

In terms of the food, it was generally very good. The chicken in particular was amazing. We also had the butcher steak, some sort of fish (sorry can't remember what exactly it was) and the mussels. Other than the chicken, however, portion sizes were really small and you had to order your sides separately. The price was quite high, even by Calgary standards (around $35 for the fish for example).

They have done a fantastic job designing the place. It is absolutely beautiful and will undoubtably be a Calgary mainstay for a long time based on its location and design alone. The rooftop patio was not open on Saturday night, but I'm sure it will be a hot spot in the summer months.

Overall it has some opening night issues it will need to iron out, but I will definitely be back.

Food: 7/10 Service 7/10 Atmosphere: 9/10

Good rundown. There's also a few more retail bays with work going on down 17th, have no idea about tenants though.

On 11th ave a new sushi place opening podium level at Keynote, and a burger bar called DeGrub opening just west of the newly opened Last Best Brewery.

Also a big exterior upgrade for Milestone's on Stephen ave, and now I think they may be building a rooftop patio? Anybody confirm?

A Japanese-French (that's what I get from its facebook page) place called 5s17 http://www.5s17.com (five senses on 17th I'm pretty sure) is opening where the very failed second location of Shawarma Knight was on 17th by Fiore, and right next door is going to be called Tuk Tuk Thai.

At 6th and 6th downtown (640 6th Ave, not sure what it replaces there) will be a Japanese BBQ called Gyu Kaku. There are two locations in Vancouver and it looks similar to Korean grill-at-table BBQ.

Freshii is opening all over the place- five locations all basically at once here if I'm counting correctly but there might be more in the malls. Three downtown, one each on 17th and Kensington.

Browns Social House is going in Mt Royal Village but I think that might've been mentioned upstream.

Lots more I'm sure but those are some things I stumbled on over the last couple of days.

Oh- Proof is GLORIOUS.

Sushi place is Haru- I don't know if this is a second location of Sushi Haru in Airdrie or Haru Sushi and Grill in Springborough and McKenzie Towne- they're separate businesses.

Degrub is where Blowfish used to be.

We had lunch at last best on Saturday. Koelsch was superb but lunch was uneven- we split a salad that was beautiful but to my taste underdressed. I got the beetroot veggie burger which was very nicely done but pattie was undercooked and the fries were disgusting- we were the first customers and it tasted like they'd used leftover fries from last night, completely dried out. That said my partner's chicken sandwich was delicious.

Speaking of delicious sandwiches: Porchetta from Our Daily Brett. ASTOUNDING. Time stood still. One of the best sammies I've ever had. Drippy fatty perfection on a latruwe ciabatta- I will dream about it. They serve sandwiches until 4pm.

I've only eaten once at Last Best and had a similarly uneven experience. I expected a lot -- I'm a fan of their beer and am happy to have them in Calgary and widely on tap -- but they really just seemed to be mailing it in when it came to the food.

Roosevelt is more pubby, 80th and Ivy more loungy (are those even words?). If you are looking for cocktails and dinner, go to 80th and Ivy. Pints with friends and snacks, head to Roosevelt.

So has anyone eaten at Charbar yet? I'm mostly curious what the prices are like.

Look about 10 posts back. Sounds like it's more expensive than the already expected expensive.

Nice photos of the space in the EV thread.

I knew "DeGrub looked wrong- it is indeed "burger" spelled backwards

Where Blowfish used to be. 11th Ave SW across street from Cookbook Co, same block as heaven's fitness.

I skimmed through before posting that question, not sure how I missed that post.
