Last week, TriMet previewed a Type 5 MAX train at the Lincoln St./SW 3rd Ave. Station. The Milwaukie platform indicated the station was served by only the Orange Line, yet the City Center platform indicated that it was served by both the Yellow and Orange Lines. Will the Yellow Line use the Tillikum Crossing? Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, is there any chance that the Powell-Division Corridor will be MAX instead of BRT?

I really wish powell-division AND SW corridor were going to be MAX, but it seems like only SW has a chance. Even that chance is iffy because of abjectly idiotic referendums in SW suburbs against "crime train." I hope we can force the needed transit infrastructure-- bus rapid transit would be about as expensive if we are going to make it a truly high capacity system. I feel the same way about Powell/division, but east portlanders have been able to squash the idea of rail because theyre afraid of losing their car commute lanes. Bus rapid transit there will just sit in traffic, mark my words. Another mistake. Both should be MAX/grade separated.

Due to since restrictions, couldn't they just run it down both Division AND Powell? For example, send the Eastbound down Division and the Westbound down Powell?

It may have been a mix of lack of funding and very little volition in Metro for a fight (remember there was virtually no information about the MAX in the planning sessions, despite half the comments from E Portlanders being MAX positive). Powell would have looked like Interstate. Safety concerns would have been night and day. There are also some pretty fantastic buildings going in presumably because of the MAX (currently 4 being built and 5 in the permit review phase). That boat has sailed for Powell. The best we can hope for is for ODOT to relinquish its ownership of Powell (and 82nd).

Then why is the Yellow Line being extended past PSU?

The switch at 3rd & Lincoln combined with the posted signage makes me think that the yellow line will end there for now.

The signs aren't perfectly clear there, but they're Orange line only at SE Clinton St Station.

And from the last Metro hosted meeting I went to, Powell-Division will be BRT, not MAX, at least to start.

As I understand it the Orange line will be an extension of the Yellow line. Most Orange line trains from Milwaukie will change colors somewhere Downtown, though some will turn back at Union Station (the Steel Bridge is at capacity). In the opposite direction the same thing happens - Yellow line trains will change colors Downtown to become Orange line trains. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but that's what they're going with.

I thought for a while that the switch immediately south of SE 12th & Clinton would have made a perfect interchange for the Orange and Yellow Lines had the Yellow Line been extended down Powell. Also, is it too early to infer that a SW MAX line would be an extension of the Green Line?

Then what would take the space from Powell to the gateway tc? Having three lines using the same tracks isn't smart.

Edit: could you have the airport line and the green line go down Powell? That would cool.

What do you mean by space from Powell to Gateway? Are you describing an east-west alignment down Powell, or a north-south alignment like the Green Line? I was imagining that the Yellow Line would run from Expo Center, through the City Center, over the Tilikum Crossing, and then branch off from the Orange Line at Powell, and then run east on Powell until it reaches the Green Line or continue on through Gresham.

I though you were talking about the green line going over the new bridge (going down Powell or another street) instead of using the the tracks that the airport and Gresham line use.

New website up at http://www.catchtheorange.com. Lots of interesting events planned over the summer prior to the opening of the line.

I saw one of the new trains purchased for the Orange line running on the Yellow line today. They look nice. I didn't have time to get on and check it out but from what I saw the seating arrangement was a big improvement.

My guess: both line will have the same color designation within 10 years.

Quote:
YOU ASKED: HOW WILL THE MAX ORANGE LINE WORK IN DOWNTOWN PORTLAND?

The new MAX Orange Line will run 7.3 miles from Oak Grove into Downtown Portland, passing through towns and fields before reaching Tilikum Crossing, the newest span over the Willamette.

We’re often asked what happens after Orange Line trains go over Tilikum Crossing and enter Downtown Portland: Do they turn around at PSU? Do they become Yellow or Green line trains? Will I have to transfer to get to the Transit Mall?

The Orange Line will share Green/Yellow line tracks once it reaches the PSU South/SW 6th & College Station in Downtown Portland. What’s more, the Orange and Yellow lines will share vehicles — this is called interlining. Throughout most of the day, Orange Line trains heading north will continue as Yellow Line trains along their normal route.

This means a one-seat ride from Milwaukie and Oak Grove into Downtown Portland and beyond, all the way up to Expo Center.
...continues at the Trimet site.

Agreed. I'm sure there was a political reason for giving this new line a separate identity, but it's clearly going to be operated as an extension of the Yellow. The claim that there will be differences in frequency between the two lines, thus some of the Milwaukie trains will U-turn at Union Station, seems suspect. I seriously doubt that the frequencies will ever be THAT out of sync. And even if they do have a few more trains going to Milwaukie than Expo Center, nothing prevents TriMet from shortlining them like they do currently on some Blue line trains. They don't need a separate color to do that.

I'm not convinced this isn't needlessly confusing... but... it is what it is. Sigh. I don't like the idea of a MAX line changing colors while en route. It'd be silly if a bus changed numbers while en route.

Hello, I have been following the Portland threads for a while now (I'm not from there) and I have always been curious, what is the reasoning behind the orange line? Like many have said before, it is pretty much an extension of the yellow line, but is branded as a completely new line, yet has no real separation from the existing yellow. Is this political, logistical, or has management just gone crazy? Please help me understand!
