Any idea what is going into the old Elephant and Castle location?

I am not exactly what place will take over the Elephant & Pub castle. I suspect maybe the entrance or the exit of the LRT might go where the Elephant & Pub were. I know that the LRT station will be below the Rideau Centre. I always check opening soon under the redevelopment button in the Rideau Centre expansion and there is no announcement yet what the Elephant & Castle will become. We will have to wait and see.

Here's an aerial I took on the 13th of the Rideau Centre construction. There was a cloud moving over as I took the shot so the colours were a little off. As noone was paying for this shot, I didn't feel like circling until the cloud passed.

Nice shot! Is that plywood wall/fence on the roof of the Rideau Centre just there to shield the view of the construction trailers from the Nordstrom restaurant? Or it something else afoot?

Simons department store prepares for August opening in Gatineau

As the latest Simons department store prepares to open its doors at Les Promenades Gatineau on Maloney Boulevard in August, the company’s chief executive toured the facility on Wednesday and explained his plans for the popular Quebec clothing retailer’s next round of expansion.

Peter Simons said the family-owned company, which has been in business since 1840 and sells mid-priced to upscale apparel, is in the midst of its largest expansion yet at a time when many other clothing retailers are hurting.

In addition to the eight stores in operates in Quebec, another seven have opened or are on the way across the country, including stores in Mississauga, Vancouver and Calgary and a Simons store for the Rideau Centre in August 2016.

U.S.-based Target was sent packing this year, after failing to gain a foothold in the Canadian retail scene; Reitmans announced plans to close its 107-store Smart Set chain. On Wednesday, popular retailer Gap announced it would close 175 stores in North America over the next year.

But Simons believes his company’s chances are different due to the “unique” nature of his stores.

“We want the opportunity to win over customers every day,” he said. “We are a small, Canadian, family-owned business. Our customers keep us alive.”

Simons said his company focuses on keeping its operations domestic, including call centres it uses. He said the company has put a lot of effort into increasing online sales and has recently been focusing on a customer loyalty program.

He also said the company also stresses community involvement, sponsoring local festivals and fundraising projects.

While the Gatineau store is front of mind for the moment, Simons said he is already looking ahead to the Rideau Centre store opening next year.

He said the Rideau store will be bigger than the Gatineau outlet’s 80,000 square feet, taking up the third and fourth floors of the Centre’s Nicholas and Rideau Street corner. Both the Gatineau and the Rideau Simons will employ about 150 people.

I am soooooo happy about these two Simons stores are opening in the region. Even less reasons to drive to shop in MTL now. And to think how as little as 3 years ago, before H&M opened in Ottawa, I used to drive to MTL 2-4 times a year, just to shop at those two stores. Now having them at our doorstep, I will save on gas and time! Only downside is that clothes from those two stores, now being available in town will result in them being less original since now many people in Ottawa will be wearing them. But thats not all bad, as its about time that Ottawa folks start wearing whats fashionable. Wasn't Ottawa ranked one of the worst in Canada for people's clothing styles a few years ago? Its finally getting better! We are becoming more of a city and less of a town!

This is a lovely shot of the top roof of the expansion. It looks so nice. It looks like the Rideau Centre expansion is attached to where the former cinemas once stood. What a nice aerial view photo!

That plywood mega-wall separating Bazille from the construction porta-pack is hilarious. I wonder how it would feel being a contractor building that temporary structure purely for the benefit of the restaurant patron's view. The aerial is really cool. The big art wall on Rideau is actually pretty awesome, one of those rare times when the final result is even cooler than the renders. The Ogilvy facade brick is looking great from the air, and even better from ground level as I drove by today. The new pedestrian bridge is really frickin' wide. I drove under it today and it looked huge, but it looks even wider from above. I seem to recall it will contain some retail GLA. The City, Cadillac Fairview, and The Bay all have stakes on the bridge, so I wonder who will control the leasing of this GLA.

Wow great aerial photo and of inside the new part of Rideau... I think the aerial one really shows the grandeur of the project and how much bigger the Rideau Centre will be once the new expansion opens up... Rideau is definitely stepping up and will be without a doubt THE mall for the whole Outaouais region! It's true.. Ottawa region was SO behind on fashion just a few years back and now to think of all the mall expansions and renovations and the new stores we are finally getting, it's amazing.

I have to wonder though, is there anyway the expansion COULD be open earlier than planned? I think most of it it set to open August 2016 but I don't see THAT much work left on the exterior and the interior seems to be coming along really quickly (to think it didn't even exist a few months ago), do they really need 13-ish months to do interior finishings? Would be nice to have it open Spring or early summer 2016 (like May or June).

BTW, was at the mall Tuesday and the Tiffany's is now open on the 3rd floor... Nice store, nice frontage, but typical of Tiffany's and wouldn't really expect anything else.

I mean not much worse than the old empty parking lot and facade that was there before.

The building has already started depreciating. There's a 15th floor 2 bedroom 2 bathroom unit listed for $474,000. That's below market value especially for a 'luxury' building and for its location. The ~$900 condo fees are probably way too high for most people. I don't think the view of the Rideau centre will affect much.

wow, so incredibly lame they knocked down that wonderful old building on the corner. ottawa is just kamikaze on its heritage commercial buildings, very sad.
