Great to see they are using Tyndall stone as a finish.

BC place had 2 full time tenants and A heck of a lot more potential for modernization in it's current 1980's configuration. It made sense to Invest 600M+ into the place.

Sell Olympic Stadium to a private Investor and let him/her/them turn it into an indoor zoo or Something. This way Montreal gets to keep the landmark.

Then build a 40,000 seat Baseball Stadium and a 30,000 seat CFL Stadium for Around the same price as the Reno would cost.

I'm guessing the maintenance costs are so high that no private investor would even take it for free.

Wouldn't you rather go to a restaurant not only steps away but connected to the MTS Centre/Convetion Centre through a warm skywalk in january? If I'm an out of towner (which I am) I'm gonna stay at the hotel literally right beside the arena (which I will)...Therefor I'm probably gonna eat there as well because It's logical and if I'm bored ill hit up a movie there, gamble there,Shop there ect. 80ish hockey games per season plus events/concerts in one of the busiest arenas in north America. And that's just 1 of the 2 venues this project is aimed to serve. You have a really busy convention Centre that's being doubled in size as we speak. And then you have out of town teams coming in 80ish times a season to stay at a true north owned hotel. The spin offs from that have crazy potential

As for your Toronto vs Winnipeg theory you're telling me if The jets were holding a fan party to watch the playoffs in may jets fans wouldn't show? You can get 30,000 bombers fans to sit on cold plastic seats to watch a football game at -30 but not a Jets game at 10-15C...take a lap bud!

I guess true north is just burning 400M dollars. You guys should send them an email educating them with your pessimistic views on economics and save them from this mistake. These Idiots have no idea what they are doing thank god uve done the research for them
I appreciate your positive outlook, but there is a lot wrong with this.

The Convention Centre hasn't been busy in 30 years. That's why it's expanding, which is really just a stab in the dark to make it relevant again. We'll see.

There's no chance that this development is relying on out of towners attending regular events like Jets games or arena concerts. 95 out of 100 people (conservative estimate) attending an event at MTS Centre live in or within reasonable driving distance of Winnipeg. There is a bit of a shortage of good hotel rooms in the downtown, so that hotel should do fine, but not
based on MTS Centre events. It is important to note that they have struggled mightily to find an operator for the hotel, which might indicate how razor thin the profit margin could be.

We also don't know who the $400 million for this development is coming from, so saying "I guess true north is just burning 400M dollars" is a bit premature. There's a good chance that a significant chunk of that will be public money.

Ugh. Are they really going to keep that multi-colored crap? That was one of the worst parts of Mosaic.

I know it's a comp, but the interior here looks like a small-town community rink concourse

Its hard to find someone who disliked the stadium, even if incomplete, in its Olympic trim. Its every little band-aid since then that's really hurt the place.
Exactly. Obviously the roof is a big one but there has been several suggestions and some of them actually make too much sense for the government to see.

Back in the days, what they tried was way too complicated. Olympic Stadium was actually the first stadium in World to have a retractable roof in 1988 (followed by the SkyDome a year later) so there wasn't the expertise on retractable roofs we have today. And still, I haven't seen a stadium in 2015 with such crazy retractable mechanism as what the big O had.

Even something simple should do it. I like Francois Delaney idea.

Forgetting about these guys aren't you? Not joining the argument, but just saying more than 41.

Aah yes I Thot he meant just the jets. Does the AHL do 82 games a year? And I'm not sure about nightly sell outs like the Jets.

With preseason I accounted for both teams at 80ish home games a season. Come on rookie get with it lol

Yup you're probably right
Theirs no way I actually think it will happen I'm just saying this would be a way better deal for Montreal. Maybe its because I'm a little younger at 28 but I just don't share the love most people have for the big O on this thread. I don't think its appealing to the eye I don't think it's a great piece of architecture Nor do I think It will be a great asset for Montreal. I think it's a Massive concrete Stadium that was poorly planned/designed and its an eye sore with No use in Montreal's Entertainment or Sports scene. IF anything It's holding it back. The tower is cool keep that and the swimming area demolish the stands and turn it into the worlds biggest indoor dog park. Every Dog owner In Canada will wish they built the Big O themselves come January.

Fixing the big O basically put's a nail in the Montreal/MLB coffin unless a private investor with deep deep pockets steps in.

On another note the loge seating is well underway at MTSC and ben macphee from the Winnipeg free press says 14M into the building this off season. I can only imagine 80% of that is eaten up by the scoreboard and loge seating

In this picture it looks like the drop is only a foot and a half or so but in reality its over 4 feet.

Montreal should hire some of the Glendale councillors to negotiate a subsidy package for the prospective investors. Call them TurfQuebec instead of IceArizona. 15 - year, $225 million proposal to "manage" Olympic Stadium. I'm sure there would be several interested parties.

After months (years) of hemming and hawing, NB has finally come through with the funding for Moncton's downtown convention centre.

This centre will also become the new home of Moncton's QMJHL team, the Wildcats. (Hence adding it in here. )

Technically I think funding at the Federal and Municipal levels needs to be finalized as well; but reality was, getting the Province hooked up was always the main sticking point.

Now to see who wins the RFP bids so we can get this thing built. (The rendering in the CBC article isn't the final version, there are I think 3 designs that are under consideration and somewhat still secret).

Agreed - I think this looks really amateurish.

I have zero problem keeping a tiny bit of tradition by sparely using some of the old metal benches in this lounge as long as it's done right. Personally from looking at this rendering I think it looks good, remember this is a general admission lounge that no other stadium has. Looks like a prototypical sports lounge IMO, I believe that said its capacity will be 500.

That said, I am very pleased to hear that they are finishing the lower exterior of the entire stadium with Tyndall stone, the same as what was used on the Legislative building & many other iconic buildings in Saskatchewan.

If it was some of the old wood bench bleachers from way back then maybe, but I agree with many that it makes the concourse look like a kids room at the community center. A even better approach would be to use LED screens to create some art/living wall that would show the colors of the seats but have a moving aspect to it. Probably cost less then the current idea.

The QC stadium project is the only high grade stadium project Canada has scene since SkyDome. Already, not even half done, it is already the best facility in the country. The fact they are using such high quality materials says a lot about the end game for the project. This is what typical stadium builds during the boom in the USA mirrored, Canada has not seen such in decades.

It's a nice nod to tradition, and to the sports environment where many people watched Rider games for decades. Why does everything have to be soullessly uniform and corporate?
