I paddled past today and the rooftop looks fully furnished and ready to go. That'll be the best patio in the city from the day it opens. That said, from some angles all the new construction on the roof has mucked up the lines of the Simmons building a bit.

Also got a closer look at the seasonal breach (the idea of which I love -- particularly at this time of year when it is full of water). There is a little cove off of it that looks purpose built for kids to wade. It looked like there is has a pebble beach.

Having a river plus city view will be pretty nice, although National on 8th has a pretty unique city view for a bar. The main determination when choosing will be the beer list vs cocktail menu.

Maybe one of our hotel proposals will have a rooftop pool / bar. I know we don' t have quite the climate for it, but it would still be nice.

That's good news. Hoping for something nice and tall with a beautiful design. EV has had some nice filler projects come up recently but I think we need another standout building in the works for the area

Does anyone know if the east village hostel owns the land it sits on? If so it would be great to see it swing a deal to put a new hostel in the upper floors of whatever gets built there.

Probably unrealistic considering the cost but I know that some of the best hostels I stayed in were those in the towers with a view of the city, at least as far as travelling in larger cities was concerned. Though I believe that most of those set ups were located in office buildings as opposed to residential.

EV guys told me that the hostel probably isn't moving for awhile, as they got a bunch of money after the flood and rebuilt everything and are pretty content.

Nothing a dump truck full of cash can't solve.

This city needs hostels, and the redeveloped EV is the perfect location for one. If they do sell in the future, I hope they work out a deal to use space within a new development or more to another decent location.

I also doubt they would be motivated to move, when after years and years of being in a horrendous location, they are suddenly surrounded by restaurants, bars and great public spaces. Then again, as you say, money is god.

In my opinion, hostels have a ton of benefits. Firstly, they are great for adding foot traffic to an area. Second, unless a backpacker is particularly broke, hostel guests are usually out and about visiting sites and spending a large percent of their tuition money on beers. Not to mention, these people aren't always here on the weekend, so they are often spending that money on weekdays when bars and restaurants could use the cash. Hostels have the potential to add a good amount of energy to an area.

I have always thought the Kensington area would benefit from a hostel. It would be even more beneficial now than a few years ago since the area has died down significantly (in terms of nightlife).

Yeah I'd rather the hostel stay in it's current lowrise format than not be in the EV at all. It's a pretty small footprint.

I agree. There are a couple hostels right in the heart of Vancouver (Granville St?), which is exactly where they should be IMO.
