It would be nice if it takes off, as the taxi services in Mobile are horrible (at least as far as serving West Mobile). Tried to get a taxi one night during last football season. 2 or 3 were no answers, 1 voice mail, and another said they had no drivers. I ended up walking.

Thanks to Mobile looks like the doors are opening in other cities as well..

Mayors in several major Alabama cities are working to clear roadblocks to bring ride-hailing company Uber and others like it to their areas.

In interviews this week, the mayors of Montgomery and Huntsville said they want ordinance changes to allow the mobile app-based ride-hailing service to launch operations. The push comes as Uber cars began running in the port city of Mobile on Thursday.

MOBILE, Ala. – Presentations were held this week at the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) headquarters in Montgomery to evaluate prospective design teams for the proposed I-10 Mobile River Bridge Project.

In April, ALDOT released a Request for Proposals for the project design. Based on the proposals, six design teams from around the country were chosen to give presentations to a panel of ALDOT and Federal Highway Administration representatives. Southwest Region Engineer Vince Calametti was also in attendance at the presentations.

“We were very impressed by all six candidates,” Calametti said. “The selection team expects to narrow the field to three designers in the next two weeks. It will be an extremely difficult decision.”

The final three candidates will give presentations to a Mobile-based selection committee in Mobile at the end of July.

Once the consultant is selected, ALDOT will begin work on the design plans needed to complete the Final Environmental Impact Statement and construction plans.

The proposed I-10 Mobile River Bridge Project includes construction of a new bridge over the Mobile River, which would tie into the existing I-10 Bayway, in order relieve traffic congestion from the current I-10 Wallace Tunnel. The Bayway, the 7.5-mile interstate bridge which connects Baldwin and Mobile counties, would also be widened from four lanes to eight lanes.

They should go for something of their own. The design on the picture is looking fine, but it reminds of something recent in St Louis, and there must be a bunch like this.
I guess they need a design that's neither too odd nor too common.

Beautiful, hope this project moves along quickly, which would be a first for aldont. Maybe Airbus can apply some pressure.

Yea, it's hard to really make cable stayed bridges unique. below is another perspective of how the towers look that make it different from a lot of other cable stayed bridges:

I like how the towers start to split away toward the top. Also, the clearance beneath the road deck will be one of the highest in the country, I think the 3rd highest.

Good point, these masts look cooler than the average, I find too.

Those cable-stayed bridges are beautifully slender, so their impact is stylish either on urban or even on rural settings. You may have heard, they built an oddly big one of these in a countryside of Aveyron, a département (a county if you will) of southern France. At first, local environmentalists were upset just as usual when you plan to build anything, and although some might think it's awkward, it's eventually a success nationwide. Most people find it cool in the landscape that's yet mainly rural. Those bridges are such elegant pieces of design and engineering.

So yeah, I hope you guys get something remarkable anyway.

Oh yes, the infamous Millau Viaduct, it has become quite iconic.

It does seem, though that it is quite difficult to make these bridges one of a kind. I guess you either have to go big (like Millau) or pull of something of epic beauty like the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Mobile's current foray into the cable stayed bridge business is the Cochrane-Africatown Bridge which isn't all that awe-inspiring, pretty run-of-the-mill:

^ It's a little older. It looks like that kind of structures underwent some improvement in recent years. Not all bridges are as big as that of Millau or as pretty as that new one in St Lou...

Your new one will probably surpass the older. Again, the masts look sexy indeed.

I'm hoping that the Mobile bridge is distinctive and becomes a landmark for the area.

Someone mentioned the Millau bridge in France. I got a chance to cross it on a visit to Europe back in 2008. We made a special side trip just to cross the bridge since it was at the time the tallest bridge in the world. It was worth the trip.

I'm so disappointed with these developers. At least they tried with the Hampton Inn on Royal. This hotel looks like it should be on the belt line in the suburbs. Now they are trying to cut down the old oak trees along St. Francis and Conception Street. Shame on them. I would rather not have this development. I don't think they even had the permits to cut down the trees. They only got to five. You would think a developer would at least consult the neighborhood about design......especially in a historic downtown area. I understand it is not in a historic district. It is about time we demand all of downtown to be in a historic overlay district that will have to go in front of the architectural review board.
