Did anyone else see YMM's May numbers?!

If its any consolation, YMM between 2008 and 2009 lost 40K pax, they are on track to drop by 80k pax this year but with double the pax count for 2014 compared to 2008; things will be about equal.

But yeah, YMM is a little airport of horrors for traffic wise, they should start getting Rick Moranis and Steve Martin to announce the pax stats.

To add to their woes we, (WG) will not be returning to YMM or YQU in winter 15/16. I don't know if WS will try their hand at vacation flights in our place (I think they already operate PVR out of YQU but I may be wrong) but for now it appears that the YMM market can't support the southern flying.

Ummm so the 787-8 is loaded on YYC-LHR from Jan 28, 2016. I'm not even going to freak out yet because the next thing you know, it's gone by tomorrow. So right now I'm just like

AC850 YYC1840 – 1010+1LHR 788 x1
AC850 YYC1930 – 1100+1LHR 788 1

AC851 LHR1330 – 1530YYC 788 D

So both daily LHR flights will be 787s.

Kind of funny timing in a way, a year ago today was the AC 787 flight into YYC for the first time.

AC seat plan as per that investor presentation was for the 333 to have 292 seats, and the B788 to have 255 up from 251. So in terms of pax count, I guess we'll want the 333 back once all the fleet changes are done.

Sorry I meant compared to last winter on the 763... Been a bit of a mixed bag on this route over the last few years.

Ahh, gotcha. Since they only took 8 frames of the 787-8 instead of the initially ordered 15, I now wonder if a frame is always going to be available in the winter for YYC-LHR. It's not really using that aircraft to its full potential.

Expect either 333 or 789 to be available year round for YYC-LHR. Its possible AC could send the 788 during the winter months, however I am hearing that operating costs for 788 vs 789 are nearly identical, this influenced the decision to upgrade all aircraft to 789 at Boeing's earliest convenience. Cost profile for the Dreamliner is similar to the 737 next generation where as capital costs between the 736 and 73G are only couple million dollars apart, operating costs are nearly identical on trip basis, and the larger aircraft has lower CASM (Cost per available seat mile) due to more seats.

Not surprising. Ft. Mac is ground zero for the volatility going on in the oil industry right now. Remember, that with Calgary gaining 37,000 jobs in the past year, the rest of Alberta still LOST 38,000 jobs over the same time period. I would bet a lot of those losses were in Ft. Mac.

Something must have happened on the Gatwick end to prompt an early announcement?

Okay found my own answer. 136th IATA slot conference begins in YVR in one week. WS has obviously got a slot pair on the LGW end and would have to announce it to the rest of the world commercial airline community.

YYC-LGW is a given with the 763 based here. Bigger question is will YYZ-LGW also be in the picture (i think the answer is yes). My prediction is 3x YYC-LGW, 4x YYZ-LGW.

Also sending the widebodies to LGW puts a good sized stake through the heart of those who want WS to become a member of Oneworld. The Oneworld global hub is LHR. My further prediction is that WS will become a member of Skyteam sometime in 2016.

I agree. Third up will most likely be YVR, once they get a second slot pair. Then they can make YYC daily and YYZ/YVR 4x/3x.

However, if Westjet is smart, they will try to avoid routes which already have 2-3 carriers operating multiple daily flights.

I think YYC-LGW is a given, but entering the bloodbath that is YYZ-LON might not be the best idea.

They should think outside the box. YWG-LGW perhaps. Even YEG-LGW is a better idea than YYZ-LGW, now that AC is only 3 weekly and runs the risk of driving itself out of the market.

Given the press release said launch cities, I think it is safe to assume there are going to be two sites served. The two main hubs as Calgary and Toronto.

I not as certain about the impact on joining an alliance. Had they announced Heathrow the would be competing directly with BA (one of their current partners) from Calgary. We will have to see if LGW is a temporary while they work on getting slots at Heathrow.

Paying the big $$$ to get one LHR slot pair is not worth it for a new TATL entrant such as WS.

The route will be purely O&D, so LGW will do the job, at a fraction of the cost compared to LHR.
