Considering the shelter housing, the rental housing, and low rent businesses in Blood Alley on the back, I really don't mind the look of the building. Also, it sounds like the heritage buildings are regrettably beyond the point where saving them completely would be viable.

Yeah, I suppose the condition of the buildings makes restoration problematic. It just would have been great to see something similar to Market Square in Victoria with the Bloody Alley side of the historic buildings.

For context:

Hmm, I hope this starts a trend of PR stunt buildings that are filled with upside. Music hall, cheap rental housing, retail with a view to the eclectic, and salvaging desperately run down but handsome buildings sounds right up my alley.

1188 bidwell (at Davie) has a proposal up for a 22 floor market rental building. So I thought the city wanted to keep it 2-3 story buildings along Davie and other commercial streets. So I guess that's not true

I guess with the long term changes in the neighbourhood the owners of this building at the corner of Georgia and Richards (kitty corner from the Telus office tower) want to be able to take advantage of the opportunity to have more retail and restaurant space available on the lower level(s). I hope the bull stays.

Too bad they aren't replacing it with a larger building.
That building seems "itty-bitty" even if it's not right in the CBD.
But I like the sculptured bull, and I hope that stays, too!! (it probably won't)

They are only infilling the "covered open areas at grade" (i.e. behind the columns) - so I think the bull will stay.

I think the Moxie's is still there. I saw the sign and the yellow door when I was going past but I didn't notice if it was open.

I recently watched a CBC undercover report that prominently featured that Moxie's as they reported on unsanitary conditions in Canadian restaurants.

Good to see big improvements along that stretch of Davie, The Alexandra has resulted in big changes, the JJ Bean is a hit and the Pomme Market is great!! I've no doubt the retail improvements will continue with this development.

Yes I'm very excited seeing these changes. I would love to see something kitty corner to td bank. The majority of the lot is surface parking

No doubt! I love the Alexandra with the retail services offered. The facade of the rental units that form the podium is very well done, imo.

1188 Bidwell should be a lovely addition, and hopefully even better ones to come.

I believe that area of Davie as part of the West End Community Plan is designated at 210' of height. East of Jervis on Davie is considered the Davie village and can go to a height of 60' (note these require setback from Davie allowing podiums of 2-3 stories only).

The building itself seems pretty meh to me, although will reserve any judgement until some better building images come. Density is good though would have liked to see more than 4 3-bedroom units in a building this size.
