Minor news from this morning. It looks like work has started or will be starting soon on the NW section of the empty floor in 222. There has been a lot of equipment added over the last day or 2.

Can anyone confirm that work will be happening soon? I am hopeful for the space being leased rather than used as storage space.

Google Fiber is apparently making good progress in Salt Lake City. I really enjoyed Fiber when I lived in Provo, and I'm pretty excited to get it here in SLC too.

An email I got from the Fiber Team:
Quote:
Hey Salt Lake City,
Have you seen us around town lately? We’re the ones with hard hats and dirt stains on our clothes.

Over the last few months, our team has been drawing up blueprints for our new fiber network in Salt Lake City. But that was just the start.

We're doing some heavy lifting – literally – to bring Google Fiber to communities throughout Salt Lake City. There are crews working on the streets with boom trucks, tunnel boring machines, and rolls of cables as we form the foundation of our network.

We'll be sure to let you know if we're going to be doing construction near your home — but here's a sneak peek at what we're up to.

This bright orange roll of conduit covers our fiber to protect it from the elements as we lay it underground. We’ll be installing enough fiber in Salt Lake City to run from here to Canada.

Safety is always a priority for us. By using a vacuum and potholing equipment to locate existing utilities, we can work around important infrastructure as we lay our fiber.

We use a lot of different types of equipment to lay fiber. Here we’re preparing the horizontal directional drill to place conduit underground.

There’s a lot to do, but we’re working hard to make sure we get it right. If you haven’t already, you can follow us on Google+, Facebook, or Twitter to hear more about what’s next.

See you around town,
The Salt Lake City Google Fiber team

Will it be confined strictly to the Salt Lake City limits?? I live in South Salt Lake currently and I would literally kill somebody for Google Fiber. I am beyond sick of Comcast.

Also, as another note, count me in as somebody who would gladly see the SLC and Sugarhouse threads combined. They are, after all, the same city.

You're looking at Salt Lake City only (for now). So close, but so far away. If you're that desperate, I would recommend moving instead of killing someone. It might be a better solution.

Did any of you see the free Google fiber tshirts that Google was giving out online a while back? If so did you get yours yet because I'm curious as to when they are supposed to arrive

Yes I did see it, I'm still waiting for mine. I believe it was going to take about 4 to 5 weeks.

Chief Burbank is gone. He's resigned. Originally, it was said Ralph Becker forced him to but now Double Talk Ralph is saying that just isn't true.

I don't know what to think about Becker anymore but it's becoming increasingly unlikely I'll vote for him again.

(not that I'm mad over Burbank going - I am very happy. But, again, like with the prison, Ralph is handling this poorly)

For anyone who's curious (like I was), these Google Fiber photos were taken by the LDS church at 1900 E Parley's Canyon Blvd.

The Regent Street Hotel
45 E 200 S Salt Lake City UT 84111-1914

It appears that they are already asking for a conditional design review approval from the city. It will be for the extra height. I will be sure to write the city and let them know that I support the conditional design approval

190 hotel rooms and 36 Residential Units with restaurant and lobby 20 story tall with a pavilion for a roof deck.

Record PLNPCM2015-00463:
Planning Commission - Conditional Design Review

https://aca.slcgov.com/Citizen/Cap/CapDe...57&agencyCode=SLCREF&IsToShowInspection=

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Regent Street Hotel is a proposed 330 foot tower with 20 full stories topped by a roof deck and lounge. The top of the 20th floor will be 298 feet; the top of the enclosed portion of the roof deck lounge will be 311.5 feet. The final 18.5 feet is reserved for potential mechanical needs. The program includes 3 stories of public, meeting and amenity space, 40,490 SF in total. Above the public space and amenities are 9 floors of hotel guestrooms, 105,660 SF total, with 190 guestrooms. Above the hotel are 8 levels of condos with 93,920 SF of built space and 36 dwelling units. The roof deck has 4,000 SF in enclosed space, 6,290 SF in deck and open space, and 1,450 SF in mechanical space. The proposed project has 251,810 SF total above grade. Burbank was great and embodied what a police force should be like. He stood up for citizens and a responsible police force. Becker made the wrong choice and I am, to say the least, unhappy.

He didn't do enough to stand up for the female police officers, obviously.

This height is great for the location and should help to encourage the future tower next door (Carl's Jr.) to go even higher. Dare we say 450' or even higher?.

I hope they are able to move as fast as permitting and the RDA allow so that this really does begin construction in early 2016.

So fucking perfect for this particular site.
And when Carls' son finally moves on, that site is perfect for a new tallest along with 1st and main (Zions).

I think Becker has proven to be a good ambassador to the city and I love his work with the Obama administration - but we don't need an ambassador. We need a mayor. Maybe Jackie Biskupski can appoint him city ambassador when she wins.
