I was happy to see one news outlet emphasize how local retailers are already competing with Cabela's and Bass Pro due to their significant online presence, so having a bricks and mortar presence in Moncton does not necessarily mean the death of their competitors.
I can see one outdoors store being negatively affected, however, here in Moncton. Considering they were on Kijiji the other night shilling for angel investors (yes on Kijiji) I fear the worst for them, but would guess the writing was on the wall before Cabela's ever came.
If one compares Cabela's prices with the same or very similar products at Green Diamond Outfitters, or Cdn Tire, it is clear that Cabela's doesn't plan to compete on price but rather on the Cabela's experience, superlative service, superior quality and great guarantee.
There will always be those who cross the street to the other retailers in order to save $1.

Time will tell, but I'm hopeful that both will do well in the Moncton market.

If Moncton was smart, they'd try to spin that success (when it happens) further and expand on the city as a shopping destination. I think our population levels in the Maritimes are on the verge of supporting a factory outlet mall complex, which might be what Moncton should try to attract next before Halifax goes for it.

Final tally is that there were about 2,000 people lined up at Cabela's at 10 AM for their grand opening on Thursday.

I drove by there this morning around 9 AM and there were about 200 people lined up to be let in. Cabela's is apparently having opening specials and giveaways for early shoppers all the way through to tomorrow morning.

I was wondering the same thing and I was driving on Mountain Road and I see there is work going on at the New Sports Chek location. And i have been at Cabelas and I was impressed with what I saw and its a cool addition to the retail landscape.

But does anybody know the timeline on Bass Pro I find it hard to believe they will be ready for a fall opening!!!

I know what you mean.

Some guy on a hunting/fishing forum in NS posted that he had been talking to a construction foreman on the site, and the foreman told him it would be a 2016 opening.

You can take this information with a huge grain of salt, as this is obviously hearsay at this point (which is why I have not posted it here before). In any event, they have made considerable progress on the main entrance area for Bass Pro in the last couple of weeks, but the interior is still just a huge gaping chasm......

The way it's going a BPS opening in 2016 is very likely, I for one believe it. They are still working the steel, the opening is far ahead.
I wonder when the new Sport Chek is opening, it's moving quite a bit at that location.

Moved from the [Moncton] Northwest thread because it deals intimately with the Mapleton Road retail district:

Didn't have time to read more during rush hour... but more development is good, I guess-wish they'd finish whats there first.
Here's a photo of the sign........

The land in question would be immediately behind the Mapleton Centre, paralleling Wyse Street on the other side of Hall's Creek. Access would be by an extension off of Louis J Robichaud Blvd. There have been rumoured plans for a retail development in this location for at least the last several years, and the land has been zoned retail by city council for some time. This is the first time that a sign has appeared on the land however.

Personally, I doubt we will see much activity here for some time. There is lots of vacant space available in more high profile developments elsewhere off of Mapleton Road (Mapleton Centre, Mapleton Crossing, Port Royal Estates), so the demand isn't there for this development right now.

Unless the realtor has some businesses already lines up fro this development I think it will be another bust, But I think if mapleton center can be 100% full and the Trinity drive area be at full capacity it would be great. But only time will tell and I think Champlain Place is starting to loose some appeal with a few empty store fronts notably the old Coach spot and where Blacks was.

There's a sign up at the Mapleton Centre announcing that the new Designer Shoe Warehouse store will be opening in the fall, presumably September.

Hey everyone! New to posting here, have been here watching the banter for a year now. As my name suggests my interest lies around Mapleton Rd and the Northwest part of Moncton. I have been watching with excitemen as things continue to grow in these areas but also ponder what else could be coming and how is this gonna affect the traffic patterns and road systems.
I see a lot of potential for growth as it sits now. Heard about Lady Ada being widened by the City, know of how if the City and developers were to communicate and cooperate how these developments could be tied into each other with new roads, hopefully allleviating the coming mess of traffic that I am predicting will exist in peak times and probably all year round.
Connecting Lady Ada to Louis J Robichaud, Northwood to Gorge Rd and heck even Mapleton to Ammon. There is still a lot of room for the City to grow for sure.

Welcome to the forums.

As your post entails, traffic on Mapleton will become increasingly problematic as this retail area expands. This point was driven home to me just this last weekend. I was driving north on Mapleton and the traffic was lined up literally for two blocks on the inside lane as people were waiting to get into Cabela's.

What will happen if Costco moves to the Day & Ross site, or if IKEA locates in Mapleton Crossing? The situation will become increasingly dysfunctional. The city (and province) need to start planning for future traffic requirements now.

At the very least:
1- the Mapleton/TCH interchange will have to be upgraded in a manner similar to the recent upgrade of the Elmwood/TCH interchange,
2- Other traffic routing will have to be explored. As you have pointed out, Lady Ada has to be extended to LJR Blvd.

The below map depicts my understanding of what the city has in mind for new streets on the east side of Mapleton Road.

The dead end just behind the Mapleton Centre corresponds to where the new la Promenade development is proposed. This new street will continue north in behind the Four Points Hotel, all the way to Day & Ross (where Costco is rumoured to want to go).

They're building a new Timmie's. Once the new one is complete, the old one gets torn down.

Costco did approach the McCain's for the Day & Ross site but the price was too high. The city wants Day & Ross out of there but money talks.

They know how valuable their land is and are not going to let it go for cheap.

I wonder if Costco might eventually move to one of the other upcoming developments along Mapleton?

Will they show a price at the menu sign and then charge you more at the window? Lol. Like they did at the Rolling Stones concert.

Something that sticks in my brain with Dominos. Not cool....
