So, England, France, Mexico and Brazil but no Mongolia - sorry.

BTW - I agree that it is an outrage that Moncton has the temerity to consider itself capable of hosting a FIFA tournament, just like it was an outrage that we were able to host the Men's World Curling Championship (twice), and the World Junior Track & Field Championships.

How dare we.........
The only World Cup that matters will be held in UK or China in 2026. In real stadia.

That's ridiculous. Every world cup matters.

Lol, the outrage is not against Moncton... its against Halifax's leadership not making a definitive investment in sports infrastructure. One could argue that physical infrastructure for health promotion through sport and the use of the field when a pro-team isn't playing is as much, or more relevant, than a library in the digital age (I think both are necessary... although I always work in Dal libraries when in Halifax because they are more geared toward academia).

Halifax and Moncton should both have stadiums have rival sports teams... this would help the outrage!

I won't be watching any of the games (at least in person) because they aren't in Halifax. Makes the point about any CFL team or otherwise when there are 400,000k people who are likely unwilling to make that drive.

As MonctonRad has indicated... the matches are good teams (some of the best).

What rubbish? Chelsea played yesterday!

The amount of salt in your posts has been pretty incredible. The Women's World Cup is nothing to scoff at and is still an international tournament for the best athletes in their sport in the world. The organizers felt that, as a country to host the Women's World Cup, they needed a stadium in each region of the country and Moncton has a stadium which meets their requirements. Nothing more to that story.

The 2026 World Cup will probably be held in North America (likely the U.S.). Under FIFA rules, the only countries that can bid are those outside of the continental regions that have hosted the last two World Cups. In 2026, that will exclude countries from Asia (because of Qatar in 2022) and Europe (because of Russia in 2018).

That is a good selection.

Congratulations to the city of Moncton for getting this event. I hope that they will have great success.

All China has are beautiful stadiums with Running Tracks

Oh, that and Europe and Asia are not going to host 2026 based on the FIFA rotation!

Interesting. I get the impression that Taylor thinks a stadium would be voted against in a referendum. However, I think that if it is a sensibly-priced stadium then people might actually support it based on past polls in the HRM regarding a stadium.

The part of the article that caught my attention was Taylor's opinion that the special reserve fund for future capital projects was created for the purpose of building a stadium.

Should really be either a stadium or light rail.

At this stage, we've built the library, Nova Centre is U/C... now the city needs proper rail-based public transit and a stadium.

The potential of the rail-cut is incredible.

I saw Mayor Savage at the Moncton Stadium today attending the FIFA Women's World Cup. I presume he was looking for some inspiration......

I actually think I'd prefer a world class public transit system built here, rather than a stadium. Would help businesses and quality of life for everyone in the city.

I'll take both, please, but if it came down to an either-or situation I'd vote for transit as well.

Then build the stadium on an established transit (rail?) route.

Actually, yeah, admittedly, it's a little embarrassing that we don't have a stadium that matches anything like Moncton's. So, instead of women's World Cup soccer matches played here in a proper city, they're over there in bumpkin land of Moncton. What are players doing after the game? Heading to Champlain Place? Crystal Palace?

I think that even a $60 million - $80 million dollar stadium would be a bold move for the Halifax area. However, this is what, 5% - 10% of the cost of a world class public transit system? The new ION system in Kitchener/Waterloo is to be 19 Km long with 17 stops of LRT plus 17 km of BRT. The cost is $818 million split $265/$300/$253 (in millions) between Federal/Provincial/Regional governments - http://rapidtransit.regionofwaterloo.ca/en/resources/ION_Story_revised_R_0315.pdf. This is the projected cost just for stage 1.

I am afraid that a world class transit system and an economical stadium are not comparable. Instead of an economical stadium maybe HRM could build a single BRT route with Right of Ways and bus platforms, or maybe a few BRT routes with combined Federal/Provincial/Regional contributions. I intend no sarcasm, I am just trying to compare apples and apples.

An economical stadium is comparable to a library, in that it probably won't pay its way but which many residents want anyway. A world class transit system is probably justifiable, but can residents accept the hefty price tag?

I tend to think that the two, stadium and transit, should be kept as separate issues. As a side note, improved transit is already being funded, as it has been for many decades: for example, new buses, express bus lanes, bus terminals ...

All fair points, but let's be frank: public transit in Halifax is absolutely dismal, as anyone who has tried to rely on it, day to day, through a cold winder can attest (even the "high frequency" corridor of Spring Garden is pathetically unreliable from 4-6pm.

I don't think we need anything like the ION, with 17 stops, but a more modest contribution of a logically structured system that includes two LRT lines: one that brings people from, say, starting in Woodside and then runs along the tracks around the harbour (past Shannon Park too!) to Barrington/waterfront. A second line that runs out to Enfield/Airport, which comes in through Bedford (this line has been previously tossed around) would be a logical second line.

I don't think that sort of thing would break the bank. I guess my point, is that I would want a big investment in a project like that, before a stadium. Or perhaps, they are tackled at the same time. Logical, rational, good for the future of the city.

It's true that the cost of transit is enormous, and will be far higher than the cost of a stadium. So it's not an either-or, but one major outlay of public cash will affect others, so it makes sense to talk about spending priorities.

A significantly improved transit system will cost a disgusting amount of money, but it will be necessary to kick the city into its next phase of urbanization and to alleviate congestion--and so that when someone complains about parking downtown, we can say "well, take transit" and have that suggestion taken seriously. Which is also why I support rail rather than just BRTs. There are a lot of people who will take a train, but for whom the bus is a lesser form of transportation. It's too bad, but I don't see that mentality ending.
