I too don't think the Laval building is as ugly as it gets ripped for. The awful puzzle piece commie blocks in Waterloo are worse. As are those London ones.

And a very troubled club indeed. I've been inside twice in recent months (my grandfather is a member) and the average age is about the same as Fox News' viewership. The Petroleum Club has been slipping into irrelevance for many years as its membership dwindles in size. It was quite an institution back in the days of conventional drilling when you could sit down for lunch and seal a deal with a handshake.

Place went downhill when they started letting in women. Or so I've been told. Many times.

These kinds of clubs are fading away everywhere... Winnipeg used to have a bunch, but only a couple remain. The former Carleton Club looks similar to the Petroleum Club... it's a stone's throw from Portage and Main, and served the same kind of business crowd. These days it's Winnipeg's largest yoga studio... that tells you something.

The younger crowd prefers doing the after work cocktails thing at places like Hy's or Earls where there are no membership commitments and you can go where you feel like going instead of the same old place all the time.

For what it's worth though, I don't think the Petroleum Club is all that ugly, although the 80s atrium glass doesn't mesh very well with the rest of what I am assuming is a 60s building?

It's now closed and it looks like they are giving it a massive facelift. Thank god!

Actually just read on the Best Western site it is permanently closed. Does anybody know whats going to happen to it? That's a prime location for something nice facing the park.

Huh - I got a brief tour of it about 1.5 years ago when we were using the space for some conferences. They showed us the rooms in case any attendees wanted to stay and many of them had just been renovated. Odd that they would do that if they were planning to close down?

As for ugly, the nearby Hilton Garden Inn at Dundas & Jarvis must be the ugliest building downtown (I always get the two mixed up).

There's more. The Sandman Hotel in downtown Vancouver had an addition built around the corner on Cambie Street. If you go around to look at it's backside, the bleakness is accentuated by the concrete wall of the office building just to the south (last pic below).

Another sweet spot for fugliness is on Cambie Street between the Sandman addition and the old CBC concrete bunker.
